Charlotte on Aug 28, 2015I primed then painted mine. Still looks great after 20 years. Of course, I have changed the paint color several times. Check with whomever you buy your paint from and they can tell you exactly what type paint you need.Helpful Reply

Diane Blank on Aug 28, 2015I just finished painting two wood paneled rooms. All of my research said I should use a shellac based primer if the paneling was not real wood but you can not buy this item in New York State. Our local Lowes suggested Zinser 123 primer then I used good quality flat laytex with primer for the walls and a water based gloss for the window sills and door frames, It took 1 coat of primer and 3 coats of laytex to completely finish the walls but it looks awesome! If you do paint, remember that it can take up to a week for the paint to really cure and harden on the paneling so be careful when putting your switch plates and curtain rods back up to avoid scratches and chips on your newly painted walls.Helpful Reply

Nml2016102 on Aug 28, 2015I have wallpapered over old paneling using anaglypta wallpaper. It's a heavy, non pasted paintable wallpaper available online. Also lowes has a type of paintable wallpaper that you can put up over paneling without the grooves showing. Comes in several embossed prints.Helpful Reply

Gail Mihalec on Aug 28, 2015If there's a glossy finish to your paneling use Zinzer's product primer which will stick to almost any surface and then topcoat with your choice of color. You can tint your primer to the top color for better coverage.Helpful Reply

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Aug 29, 2015I would look into Behr's Marque paint sold at Home Depot. This paint is on my list to try since it can go over wood, painted wood, metal, gutters, and cover without primer. It is worth a shot. If the paneling is really shiny and you do not like Behr, then priming with a special primer for glossy surfaces and use light coats! Then let that sit for a day or two and then use a good paint. If you like Lowe's then Valspar is a good paint. Good luckHelpful Reply

Judy on Aug 29, 2015Scrub it well with TSP then just paint it. I painted mine (it was very dark) with Behr eggshell finish. The windowless room went from way too dark to bright and pretty.Helpful Reply

Dee on Aug 31, 2015Use kilz primer first then paint with a good latex paint with primer in it, I like Signature by Valspar, use a good roller with a lot of dencity to get in the linesHelpful Reply

Jean on Oct 03, 2015I bought this stuff at Sherwin Williams (you will have to ask them) that cleans and preps the wood. Then I primered with kilz then painted multicolored stripes to match a pouf and pillows I bought from Joss and Main. Took one pillow to SW and got a quart to match each stripe. Came out beautifully and is so bright and cheerful after that awful brown. Then I redid the ugly gray paneling in my kitchen to look like barnwood. Painted it flat brown then streaked it lengthwise with a whisk broom and off-white. Finished with some knots, lines (for ends of boards) and pencil eraser 'nails' along the lines. Came out pretty rustic and that's fine for what it is. Thinking of something else for this area soon, though. Good luck!Helpful Reply

B. Enne on Oct 05, 2015We used liquid sandpaper, a high adhesion primer, then a good quality acrylic/latex paint...It has lasted over 15 years, and is still holding.Helpful Reply
