Painting kitchen cabinets

I would like to repaint kitchen cabinets that are already painted. I don't know where to start. Can I paint over the paint without priming? Should I sand them if they're already painted? What's the best type of paint for kitchen cabinets such as matte, glossy?

First, you need to know whether the paint on your cabinets is water based or oil. If it's water based, most likely, it's semi gloss. In order for your paint to adhere to the cabinets, you'll either lightly sand to remove the shine or buy a deglosser, which you can brush on or get the one you spray on. Now, your ready to paint. If you deglossed, prime is optional, but not necessary. If the paint is oil based, stick with oil paint. If you want to use water based semi gloss over oil, you'll have to prime, first. If you decide to use oil based paint over whatever is already there, you really don't need primer. Oil sticks to any paint. And you don't have to degloss. Hopefully, the existing paint isn't dark because if it is, and you want a lighter color, depending on how dark it is, you'll have to prime.

I would strip the existing finish so that the cabinets come out evenly.
  • My cabinets already had water based paint on them that was semi gloss all I did was wash them to make sure all the grease was off of them and I painted them with gloss white paint that already had the primer in it, that was at least 3 years ago and they still look great. I didn't strip them or do any sanding just washed let dry and painted them with Valspar with the primer in it, I don't use Valspar any more because it is to thin, I now use Sherwin Williams with primer and I love it,, its thicker and it covers a lot better, I can scrub them with soapy water and you don't have to worry about the paint coming off, Below are some of my pictures and they still look great.

Like Carolyn I repainted my semi-gloss cabinets @ 5 years ago. I cleaned them with murphys oil soap to remove any grease & then slightly sanded them with a 80 grit sanding sponge. After that I wiped them down with cheesecloth to remove the dust. After that I repainted with another semi-gloss paint. They still look great.
