Ceramic tile as back splash in kitchen, can I paint it?

Ceramic tile in a dark taupe color is installed under kitchen cabinets and on the counter top in my kitchen. My floor is darker wood and so are the cabinets. I'd like to paint the back splash with chalk paint in a light color. Leave the counter top for now. Would it work?

Yes you can! I did! I used acrylic paint in 2 or 3 colors and mixed with el)mers glue! I then stipled on the tiles ( be careful not to get on grout). I gave the tiles a marble ( granite) look! I then put "clear polyurethane" over it when it completely dried. You can't tell that it is painted on!!! Be sure to get the clear poly and not the regular for it will yellow! Don't use a scrub pad to clean just warm soap and water or clean with windex! Good luck

My daughter put on primer and then latex paint and it looks great.

I have done it with Melamine paint and it worked great. Latex will work too.

You can paint ceramic tile with a good oil-based paint. It is really sticky so it adheres well to slicker surfaces like tile and it sets up nice and hard once it cures completely. Be sure that you really clean the tiles well first. Use a mildly abrasive cleaner that will cut through any buildup on your tiles. Let this dry completely before you begin painting. Since your tiles are on your backsplash you should be fine but generally if they are going to get really wet over and over again, your paint may peel off over time. However, you do have a really good chance of success if you use an oil-based paint.Hope this helps! Good luck!
