Need help with chairs

I've inherited two chairs and small side table. I love the style of the chairs and am going to get them reupholstered in a tone on tone blue pattern. I want to redo the arms and legs but I'm not sure if I should just re-stain in the same color or if I should antique them somehow or what? I'm planning on having this table with the 2 chairs, so will do the same technique. Help. Pic would help me as I have trouble visualizing things. Thanks in advance.

The pattern you picked to me would look better with a different color arm and leg.Maybe distress them with a gray tone from the fabric. If you do not like that go on Pinterest or Houzz.

What a lovely set of chairs and table Sonia. I'm sorry for the loss that brought about the inheritance though. I personally feel the style of this furniture call for stained wood, but that doesn't mean one can't break the rules if you really prefer to. Maybe going somewhere in the middle using a colored stain. The charcoal gray on the bottom row might look very nice with the fabric you've chosen. http://hersite.info/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Wood-Stain-Colors.jpg Will you be having your upholsterer change the back to smooth? I ask because the pattern on the fabric, depending on the scale, might work better that way.

Ok, Here's my 2 cents...I would re-stain the wooden table & the wooden parts of the chairs a medium cherry stain. The cherry stain will make the silver & blue in the fabric pop. I would change the tacks to a silver or pewter, OR remove them altogether.

Agree with Kayo Frazier about the cherry stain although I do like the present stain colour as well.

Everyone seems to be redoing their chairs by painting the wood either white or black. I'm wondering if I should try a silver...to bring out the silver sheen in the fabric, or would that just distract from the style of the chair?

White will make it pop more. No silver, unless your a bling person, is my suggestion.

No I dont think so but I guess it will depend on what else is is the room or will the chairs be by themselves.

Well, what else in the room is a darker cherry stain on the coffee/side table and even my dining room set. It's just a bit darker than what is on the chairs now. I just didn't think a blue would go with cherry color. The are Queen Anne style as well. The other thing I was wondering is if I do change the color of the wood on the chair, do I have to do all the wood (coffee/side/dining) so everything is cohesive? I love some of the antiqued things on hometalk but as you can tell I'm not gifted design wise to know how to make things flow.

@Sonia Burrows it's really all about personal preference in my opinioin. You could possibly paint just the wood on the chairs, even with everything else stained cherry, but it's hard to say for sure without seeing photos of the room these chairs will be in. If they are the only things painted, they could stand out. Maybe that's what you want. With the rest of the furniture dark cherry (usually means formal) a somewhat metalic (not super shiny like chrome, but more of a pearlized silver) could work quite well in my opinion. I'm not one to always follow design rules so I say if you like it, go for it. I live in a Queen Anne Style Victorian Revival home with wide woodwork, but most of my furnishings are MCM or modern. I prefer stained wood over painted, but I do have a few pieces that are painted. So a little bit of "bling" with the silver paint, might be a fun change in a mostly formal room. Have some fun!

You could try painting the fabric on the chairs.... Lots of 'how to's' in Hometalk and Pinterest.

Thanks everyone. I was hoping to maybe due a silver or pearlilized champagne finish but when I contacted Modern Masters they didn't recommend it for things that would get everyday use. I wanted to sort of break out but opted for the safe route and picked up some Minwax Polyshade in a color that matches the rest of my furniture. Hope it doesn't end up looking to matchy-matchy.

@Sonia Burrows I'm sorry you couldn't have the fun you wanted, but very nice of Modern Masters to let you know their product wouldn't have worked in your case. It would have been a lot worse to find that out on your own. Please come back and share the after pictures with us.

COLOR block! It's trending now. And you're SO lucky to have 2 matching chairs. Pinterest me, I have a board called 2.nd Chances. TONS of chair ideas. I have a chair fetish. Here is the latest. I'd sand & stain the wood to your liking. Big wide stripes are also in. Lucky you. This would be GORGEOUS to own!

Thanks to all for your input. I had trouble using the Minwax (looked awful) and ended up taking the chairs and table and getting them professionally done. Unfortunately the table didn't take the stain the way the chairs did. I was told the chairs were oak and the table was maple.
