What to do with laminate covered cabinet doors that are peeling!

I can't afford to replace cabinet doors, some of the laminate is peeling off, "wood" underneath is in great shape. If we glue down the laminate, what can we successfully paint with or any other ideas that would look great?

Hi Lyn, if they are thermofoil, gluing them back down won't help much. If they are more like melamine with no bubble or movement, (= tight laminate sheet), you probably could glue, clean, prime and paint them. There are numerous posts about this topic on this site. I answered this one recently with links here...you will be able to figure out if they are thermofoil or not, by checking the links that I provided: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/kitchen-dining/q-suggestion-for-updating-white-thermofoil-kitchen-cabinets-9628433
I currently have white thermofoil kitchen cabinets

@B. Enne HI...thank you... the 1st link you provided is the one that ours look like. They did not break their seal in the middle...the few that it has happened to it is a very "crisp" like material that is starting to come off and some fell off at the top edge of the panel that you don't see when the cabinet doors are shut. A couple of them in our bathroom have a little further damage. We bought this home in 2004...it was built in 1992. They are a soft light yellow. We have 4x4 inch white tile counter tops...UGH. We would like to get rid of that somehow too, without pulling it all off.

I'm still unsure about my cabinets that are just painted but regularly used places seems to just roll up the paint and leaves the wood underneath. So they are hard to clean. I've repainted and sanded a little around those places and it looked great but the paint is already rolling and scratching up again. Any ideas from anyone?

@Ethel Edwards Did you use a high adhesion primer and let it dry well? Did you use an oil top coat or acrylic/latex? What sheen level is your paint: flat, satin, eggshell? Some people use polyurethane coat over their paint for durability. I never have, and have only had a couple of chips. I have to say that the current paint that I am using really needs to cure well, since it scratches easily. Also some latex paints seem more rubbery than others...

Im thinking you could regalia them to start then perhaps refinish with the proper paint etc.

I would cover them with a wood looking shelf liner paper with the adhesive back. . I did my end tables that way and they look great,

I would not cover them with shelf liner that eventually will be worse.

Lyn, would it be possible for you to share photos of your cabinet and close ups of the damage? My thought, without seeing them, would be to use a sharp straight edge razor and carefully cut off the parts that have come loose, sand them as smooth as you can, and then prime and paint.

B Enne my paint may be the problem because I did not use an primer. But when I did this years ago one of the best carpenters told me to clean the cabinets good. Then use an extra good paint and that will be fine. It took several coats but looked beautiful. It has even been long enough the second time don't remember the finish of the paint but was recommended for kitchen. And did not use an top coat.

@Ethel Edwards Update: Now that my paint has had more time to cure, it is tougher, but it still doesn't seem as durable as the previous paint...I should have primed...''Practise what you preach!'' LOL

Ever tried chalk paint? Does not require any preparation whatsoever. If you glue down the laminate then paint it, you should not have a problem. You will also need to wax the paint afterwards. I am about to start working on an old stereo cabinet given me years ago. I had to peel off the top since it was coming off. Today I plan to start painting it. I will post pictures later. BTW chalk paint can be pricey but Walmart carries a brand called Waverly Inspirations which is about $5 for an 8 fl oz container. It goes a very long way, can be thinned and clean up with water. Dries in about 30 minutes. Good luck.

I had vinyl flooring on my basement stairs. It was on the risers too and it was coming lose. I thought the only way to fixit was to reglue them. I had a handyman here so asked him to fix them. I was very upset at his method at the time but it has worked out great. He used a staple gun. LOL But I have painted them and you can't tell. So if you are planning on painting anyway...

If you find a wallpaper print you really like , glue it on. Also, adhering flashing or punched run gives it an awesome look, and magnets will stick to it😉
