Glazing over oak cabinets

Can I glaze over shiny oak cabinets to make them darker or do I need to lightly sand them so they will adhere?

When I did my kitchen cabinets I used Laquer thinner first..., I thought I will skip the sanding but....no. It was a mess and it took forever, just sand them and you will save time. If you don´t sand them they won´t take the new stain or it will be uneven. Good luck! Post the before and after picture! ; )

Yes. If you want to paint anything, if it's shiny it must be treated first for the paint to stick. You can sand . Or their is a product called liquid sandpaper you can wipe on. That also will pretreat without sanding.

Yes, you must sand to give the surface "tooth" so that the application of stain will stay on. A light sanding, not taking the current stuff off. I would try an inconspicuous place first. Rather safe than sorry.

I would sand them first before applying glaze.I do not think the new finish will adhere.

They have many new paints that say you do not need to sand first but I would highly recommend that you lightly sand the surface first. With a project like cabinets, why take a chance?

I used a product called Restorzit on my bed, a rocker and an old antique stand/bookcase/ All the instructions said to do was use the special soap to clean the item to get all the old dirt, wax etc off it first. Then I took a clean lint free cloth and rubbed several coats of the finish letting it dry in between coats. It turned out very shiny and beautiful. No sanding at all. I was not in the market to take the old finish off, sand, stain and seal these items. I plan to do my kitchen cabinets someday. There were 3 finishes, light, medium and dark,but by now there may be more.

Are you wanting to darken the finish on the whole cabinet or just add glazing to somewhat darken them as in the picture below?
