My friend gave me 2 of these when she moved to her new home.

B. Enne on Sep 04, 2015Paint, add trim, paper or fabric backing and new hardware...You could also frost the glass with a film if you need to hide things. You could also put an LED light or strip in the glassed-in area. https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=adding%20trim%20to%20book%20shelves&term_meta%5B%5D=adding%7Ctyped&term_meta%5B%5D=trim%7Ctyped&term_meta%5B%5D=to%7Ctyped&term_meta%5B%5D=book%7Ctyped&term_meta%5B%5D=shelves%7CtypedHelpful Reply

Swan Road Designs on Sep 04, 2015What a nice friend! First question...where do you plan to use them? A couple of ideas immediately come to my mind. One is if you have a fireplace, you could flank it with them, paint to match the walls in that room, put some colorful wallpaper on the inside of the back and some soft lighting as B.Enne suggested. Or...if you have space on either side of a double or wide window, you could create a similar effect but turn the area into a window seat between the furniture pieces. In either case, turn them into part of the architecture of the room. My preference would be to leave the glass. My recommendation would be to leave the glass in them and see how you like it in whatever setting they end up in. The glass would be a good way to protect special treasures/keepsakes from intruding hands and save any tedious dusting.Helpful Reply

Swan Road Designs on Sep 04, 2015Okay, the dining area, but are you set on using both the pieces there? They might serve you better if they are split up and utilized in different ways. When one lives in an apartment, space for storage is always lacking, so you might want to delegate one of them to your bedroom or your child's room. In view of the fact that you aren't in your own home, I would avoid painting them until you have your own "nest."Helpful Reply

Upstater on Sep 04, 2015Target sells this wallpaper product that is great for adding some color/pattern to the back of the glassed in area. And it peels right off when you want it gone!Helpful Reply

Sharon Seiber on Sep 05, 2015You are so lucky! What a great friend. There are so many ways to utilize these. As you have a baby, I think the best way to do this is using wallpaper. When the baby gets older, or you move to a house, you can paint to your heart's content. I would just use the wallpaper inside the cabinet, for right now.Helpful Reply

Annette N on Sep 05, 2015It is beautiful wood, you could use them as book cases and add small items to make it more personal or you could use them in a dining room as buffets or servers, What is displayed in the glass parts will add as much or as little color and which colors as you choose.Helpful Reply

Denise on Sep 05, 2015Make sure that it is wood. If there is a laminated finish on it even the removable wallpaper could damage it. And do not use shelf liner paper with adhesive on it!!!! I would suggest purchasing a clear latex primer (zinser makes one) and then putting whatever type of paper you want over it. You could also cut a thin piece of plywood to fit in the back and cover it with the paper and could be removed when you want a change. I hang wallpaper and I know what it can do to beautiful wood if not primed before hand.Helpful Reply

Paula on Sep 06, 2015If you wanted to totally change the look and update, you could use "FAT" paint or chalkboard paint and really give it a new look. I would also consider putting a light color in the top cabinet at the back or even a mirror, you could even remove the glass doors.Helpful Reply
