Our Sun Porch using the ScreenTight System.

Though Spring is more than a month away the warmer weather we've had and the garden posts that have been popping up in the last week have me thinking it was a good time to post about screened in/sun porches. Funny that before I get all the photos loaded it starts to snow! It's 41 degrees here, but it's snowing like crazy. Wasn't in the forecast either.

You may have noticed that my dear hubby has a finger bandaged in a couple of the pictures. Just a reminder to never ever stretch your arms to either side of you to hold wood in place while you're using a framing nailer. Or any nailer for that matter. The thing double shot and a humongous nail went straight through his finger, bone and all. Major ouch and a trip to an Omaha hospital emergency room. The nurse and female doctor had to call in a male doctor to remove it. Hubby watched. I didn't, but did take a photo of it with my cell phone without managing to look at it. Don't worry, I didn't post that picture.

    Thank you every one.

Pat, you'd enjoy your back porch even more than you do now if you screened it in.

    Becky J and Carlene, I totally agree. :^) ...»

Douglas, would you be able to use one year round where you live?

Rhoda, will you be using the ScreenTight System to redo yours? We learned how easy it is to replace screen. The second year it was in use we had an over abundance of grasshoppers that ate holes on ever single section of fiberglass screening. We replaced it all with Solar Screen since it's denser and they can't get their pinchers around it to chew. It's darker as you can see on all the windows since they had Solar Screen in the photos above, but it's well worth the extra money. Not only does it save on energy costs, but as we found, the grasshoppers can't eat it.

Janine, I highly recommend the Screen Tight System. You can purchase it at either big box store.

Barbara and Jamala, this was done a few years ago so hubby is all healed. Thank you both for your concern.

Kevin, we're planning to someday close in the sleeping porch to make it into a three season porch. You can see that porch on the left side of the full view of our home.

My Hubby is going to install a screened in porch at our house [ the front porch is 15w / 40 long. The screend in part will be 15w xapprox 30 long, the rest of the porch area is not covered by roof, that is in front of the office entrance, which is fine. Being perm disabled I like to sit out but can not stand the bugs, so once it is screened in, I will be out there often with my rescue pup. I will keep this on file to refer to it. Thank you and it is beautiful. I hope your husband heals well.

Well the bugs can't eat aluminum Rhoda, so that'll work just fine. I'm sure you'll be able to use yours before it's warm enough here to use ours.

Thank you Kelly. Sounds like you have almost a whole house screened it. Ours is just 12x12. Thank you for the well wishes for my hubby. He's all healed as we did this a few years back.

Again, I hope yoru hubby's hand heals well..

With a little patio heater, you could probably use one year-round here, Becky. It is going to dip into the mid-30s tonight, but, fortunately, those spells rarely last more than a few days.

Becky, no doubt you will love a screen porch...we love ours. Kids love "camping out" on the porch...we even put up a pup tent for them...ha. Now my grown kids still love it! When they come over, they head for the porch if the weather is warm! Hope hubby's finger gets well soon!

I absolutely love it! In fact I love your house and the colors. What a nice job! I am using this as incentive for my husband! I just showed him your pictures and his excuse is it just snowed. : ).

Thank youJeanette, we do love our home. I thought about having green gables since I love Anne of Green Gables and green is my favorite color, but the house disagreed with me so I listened and chose the midnight blue.

We dine out on the sunporch whenever the weather permits and now that I have a full size laptop I'll be surfing the web there too. ...»

Thank you Sherrie. It just snowed here too. We did this during the fall a few years back. I shared it now because I thought maybe others would be interested in closing in a porch of their own. It's such an easy process that even with the mishap my hubby was thrilled we did so after our first use.

Here's a more current, though still before we faced the steps. I had just finished power washing the front porch and was working on my wicker settee. Before I was able to repaint the porch it rained, then our daughter's wedding then a heatwave and drought. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this Spring/Summer and I can finish what I started.

Beautiful house! I love the white door is that a screen door? I just had a new door installed and now I need a screen door. I love the scroll work on it. And I love the dog! Since neighbors seem to think I am nuts about animals they either leave them here or ask me if I want another one. The blue and white is perfect. Did you also paint it yellow by the door? The picture I see it looks yellow, if so it is very clever! I can't for the life of me put colors on the outside together. I wish I ...»
had that talent. I would love a screened in porch right now I will settle for new rails. Husband doesn't want to work out in the cold...he has me to help! But that maybe the reason he is bucking it right now. ; )

Thank you Sherrie. The whole house is a creamy yellow with white trim and deep blue gables. The sun washed out the color on the full house shot. And yes it is a screen door. We had a full glass screen door, but I really wanted a gingerbread door.

Thank you SheilaG, I hope you ...»

    get one someday.

Thank you Barb. I truly am blessed with an awesome hubby. We celebrated 33 years as man and wife yesterday. ♥♥

Oh ouch Straight Nails Construction! I'm so sorry. My hubby was lucky, he has not residual damage.

    Very smart choice Fran.

Thank you Home Spot. We do get mosquitoes, so it's nice to have a place to sit at night without that worry. Some years are worse than others as I'm sure that's the case most places. We're thinking of adding an outdoor carpet this year to keep the crawly bugs out too.
