We didn't have to do anything extra on this installation. The heat generated by the fireplace doesn't exceed 90F where the TV is located and the flue pipe is double insulated so heat migrating from the flue was not an issue. Heat is something that should be considered when placing a TV over the fireplace. The problem is not so much that the heat can damage the screen or housing, but that the TV may not be able to properly cool itself while in use for long periods of time if the area around it is in excess of 90F.
  • Belco is right on with this. Its all about the heat. The biggest issues come with fireplaces that are non-vented heating types. These fireplaces produce a lot of extra heat out the front and unless the TV is high enough or there is a large enough mantel above to divert the heat out and away from the set that would be one place not to install a set at. The manufacture of the television will have max limits on heat near the set. Follow these instructions and allow for sufficient air flow around. As many times sets are placed into a frame of sorts without any air delivery to the back air vent holes in the TV and they end up overheating. And that advice goes for putting the TV in other locations besides just over the fireplace area.
