Because people have been making their own for years and manufacturers found a niche market for those that don't. It's the American way. Plus they have overhead that makers don't.
You can actually make your own but you need to buy the track, the hangers for the door, the rollers for the bottom and 1/2 to 3/4 inch plywood finished with whatever you desire. You will also need a block at the end of the roller so the door does not come off the track. If the track is too wide for the plywood, just add another strip of plywood to the top piece to give you the thickness you need.

Because they are the latest fad. They are in all the makeover tv shows.
Because they are large doors, then they are not manufactured in the huge numbers that standard doors are, and specialty items almost always cost more. In addition, standard doors can be solid core or hollow core, while barn doors are almost always heavy, aged, wide boards with heavy hardware. Before you make your own, do a cost analyst of the materials and your skills. Best wishes ☺️
Because people are willing to pay the ridiculous price for a "designer" look.
I have a real barn, and I can tell you definitively the cost has NOTHING to do with the size of the door. Hardware for my huge actual barn doors is cheaper than hardware for the fad "barn door" type sliding doors.
The cost for "barn door" hardware should be half of what it is. But price is not going to go down as long as people are willing to shell out more than they should, or until there is good competition producing fairly priced hardware. That's the American way.
Hi there, just because they are trendy.
