Consider building a small step bench in front of the machine, the width of the machine.

I have the same problem and bought a 2-step fold up ladder. Not the best solution, but it works well for me.

I'm 5'5 and can't reach a lot of things! I keep the plastic fold up step stools handy in the kitchen, laundry room, pantry and hall closet. Do you have any room in your laundry to make a vertical storage for soap etc? Maybe even a few crates attached to the wall at a height you can reach.

I am 5'3'' and have the same trouble, I keep stools handy in a number of rooms, one in the kitchen (my cupboards go to the ceiling), to use in any room I need it on the main floor and one in the basement for anything I need to reach in the laundry room, store room or closet shelves. I even have a foldable stool for our fifth wheel travel trailer that I keep in there! Being short isn't fun, but it is manageable with the help of folding stools you can slip into small spaces to keep out of the way when you don't need them. I got real good at climbing onto cupboards when I was a kid, it even got to where my mom would ask me to get things off the top shelf for her (she also was 5'1" and used stools for anything she couldn't reach).

Well, I"m 4' 10" and it is hard to reach just about anything up or down. IF it is up I use a two step folding ladder, if it's down in the washing machine I use a pair of those large BBQ tongs to get my clothes out of the washing machine. Also, use them to reach items on the first shelf of my top cabinets. I live by myself so have to improvise a lot. I also have trouble getting in and out of SUV's ( my inseam is 26") so nothing fits!
