How to Make a DIY Board and Batten Wall With Custom Paneling

Tools and materials
- 1x2, 1x3, and 1x4 boards (amount depends on your wall size)
- Nails and nail gun (or hammer and nails)
- Wood filler
- Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
- Caulk and caulk gun
- Paint and paintbrushes
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Saw (if you need to cut boards to size)
- Drop cloths or plastic sheeting (to protect your floor)
Steps
1. Plan and measure
Measure your wall and decide on the spacing you prefer for the paneling. This is your chance to personalize the design to fit your style. Once you have your measurements, gather all the necessary materials and tools.
2. Start nailing the boards
Begin by nailing the 1x4 board horizontally across the top of your wall. Use a level to make sure it's all straight.
Vertical boards
Next, attach the 1x2 boards vertically along the sides of the wall. These will act as trim pieces. Make sure they're evenly spaced and level.
Attach the 1x3 boards horizontally along the bottom of the wall, creating a base for your paneling.
3. Fill nail holes and sand
Fill any nail holes or gaps with wood filler. Smooth it out using a putty knife and let it dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Once the filler is dry, use medium-grit sandpaper to sand down the patched areas and any rough spots on the wood. This will ensure a smooth surface for painting.
4. Caulk seams and paint
Apply caulk along the seams where the boards meet the wall. This will create a seamless look once the paneling is painted. Use a damp cloth to wipe away any excess caulk.
Paint
Now, it's time to paint! Choose a color that complements your room's aesthetic. Apply paint evenly to the paneling, using a brush for smaller areas and a roller for larger sections.
Allow the first coat of paint to dry, and then apply a second coat if needed for full coverage. Follow the paint manufacturer's instructions for drying time between coats.
