    how old is the unit?

Depending on the age of your appliance --If the smell is occurring during a run cycle it may mean your motor is going out. We had that happen and if memory serves, this was the first sign, it progressively became worse as we noticed over 6 more wash loads until we realized what was happening with the motor burning out. If it's a new unit, and this continues to happen, a call to your appliance store may be in order. If your unit is bran spank-en new it could be an initial phase with the manufacturing coating reacting with your dish-washing detergent - gel detergents sometimes are reactive, we were told to use something like Cascade dry detergent and less of it. Hope that helps.

pour vinegar in it once a week and run the washer with hot water

I use vinegar as a rinse agent. Glasses sparkle and it also helps keep the dishwasher clean.
