Do you have Lee Valley Tools, they have great rust removers.
In response to the question of finishing the metal trunk, I am also refinishing a humpback metal trunk and have found that the best way so far to remove rust is to use vinegar and steel wool. I first used a wire brush to remove the thick rust, then used the vinegar and steel wool.

I took a wire bristled brush and brushed it vigorously, the rust came off, then I wiped the metal down with some oil. But you can repaint in, if you'd rather
Keep in mind that Vinegar only works on ferrous metal.
Thanks for info
Use both fine and regular grit sand paper. BTW, the rust may give the trunk character----- I wouldn't remove too much of it.
If you want to clean the rust and leave the metal bare, use a wire brush. If you want to paint over it, look for a product called naval jelly. It is used in marine applications. It turns the rust solid and keeps it from flaking off. It creates a surface that you can paint over.
Here’s a link to the products, I have the Evapo Rust

Might be easier than all the scrubbing...thanks
Sure. Good luck!
Oh, that's different LOL! But don't remove ALL of it---- it will take lots of character away and people pay a lot of money for things like this now!
Awesome thanks
