Tried a bowl of baking soda, left newspapers for a week in it to absorb the smell, brought it outside for a few days for some fresh air.
Any ideas? It’s for sale if I can’t get the smell out! Lovely vintage trunk!

You will not get rid of cedar smell but great storage for wool and sweaters. I envy you.

  • May I ask why? People buy them to keep items moth free and for the pleasant scent.

Hello! If storing your regular wardrobe in the cedar chest, the cedar smell can be overwhelming. To get rid of it, apply sealant to the interior of the chest – that should do it! Your local paint supply store or home store carry sealants. You can even order them online. Good luck!

Cedar is to keep moths out of your sweaters and wool clothing. The scent is a part of the process.

In some parts of world/country, real cedar wood is quite rare, and people pay extra money for it especially because of the unique cedar smell. If you do not care for it, my suggestion is to sell the cedar chest to someone who is seeking its natural properties, and put your earned money towards a storage unit of you choice.

2 coats of shellac should work but make sure that the 1st coat is completely dry before you do the 2nd coat

I'm confused--- isn't that the reason for a cedar chest? The cedar smell repels moths and other flying critters.
