Iron trusts. You could check Home Depot TO see if they have a coating you could put on. An iron skillet must be kept seasoned, or it will rust. There is a product that removes rust. You could put it on a rug, but it will leave rust on it.

Funny, I need to do the same thing. I know they make "liquid rubber" type products that you can brush on or dip into. On my list this weekend to find at the hardware store.
Treat the rust with a rust neutralizer. Then prime and paint with oil based products. The iron has to be encapsulated in paint or it will rust.
