How to change the smell of old, stale wood trim?

My house was built in the 1950's. The trim and sill around the windows are stained. Probably the original is still on there. When it rains, I detect a stale, wood smell. How can I get rid of that? Do I need to sand and re-stain - would painting them help? It's just an old wood smell I can't stand! Any suggestions?

You will have to sand off the original stain, clean any remaining residue and either re-stain or paint.

I have a house built in 1880 and get that smell also. I use Clorox clean up on the sills and trim and that seems to do the trick.

If you're only getting the smell when it rains , then moisture is getting in and the windows need to be resealed. Sanding and painting will be a waste of time until that's done .
