I'm not an electrician, but I agree with you! My suggestion would be to Mount it on a wall and cover the Gubbins with the top of the windmill. If you put a shelf underneath, maybe the bottom part of the windmill could sit on that.......?
Do I understand correctly, you want to replace existing fan blades with blades that look like the sails of a windmill and cover the existing hub with one more windmill like, while keeping it on the ceiling as a fan? That sounds like a great hack, but not one that should be attempted by a DIY who would has to turn to Home Talk for help. If it's just changing out the blades you would only need to make sure that the new ones are not too heavy and in balance.

Hi Marsha, you can do this using the brackets off the original blades, try to keep them the same size and weight, and you will also need a balancing kit to reduce wobble.
