It’s no surprise that the cold winter months are slowly creeping up on us. I’m not going to lie, I am probably one of the few that happens to love winter, what I don’t love about it however is the amount of gear that comes along with it. With three kids in the house and two grown ups the pile of winter gear accumulates quickly.

As most families probably do, we use to store our abundance of hats and mittens in a large basket by the door. This worked to keep everything contained for the most part, but sorting through it every morning to find everyone’s gear was a huge pain and often left half of the stuff thrown all over the floor. Not to mention at the end of the day when everyone would throw their wet mittens in the basket thinking they would be dry by morning.

This year I was determined to come up with a solution to storing all of our gear and making our morning time run smoothly and efficiently.

I think this system that I will be using this year is going to be perfect! Read below to find out how I repurposed an over the door shoe organizer into the best winter gear storage solution!

This is what I had been working with in the past. You can see that the basket is already overflowing with hats and mittens and it is nearly impossible to find what you need quickly.

I decided to try storing everyone’s winter gear in this over the door shoe organizer.

I really liked this one as it had mesh pockets and not the usual plastic ones I have seen before. The mesh will help wet mittens to dry quickly, as well as allow any sand or derby to fall out and not collect into a gross mess at the bottom of the pocket.

I went through the basket and started sorting all of the items. Each person in the family is assigned a row to keep all of their things organized. My youngest has the row closest to the ground so she can reach all of her things easily, and the older ones have the higher up rows. I was left with one empty row at the very top that I used to store any extras that we had.

I am absolutely in love with how this system turned out. I am pleased to say that so far the few times we have used it, it has worked out wonderfully. I do keep this storage system hanging on the inside of the closet just to keep everything out of sight, but it is so satisfying every time I open the door to see everything looking tidy and organized.

I, too, have been using one of these for years, storing my socks in them over the closet door in the bathroom. My 2 granddaughters-by-proxy love it so much they wanted an organizer also. So.... yup - I got them each one in different colors. They love it! A friend has 2 of these. One she uses to store canning supplies such as lids, rings, jar lifters, etc. I love her idea!! I'm thinking of getting another one to hang in the mudroom for scarves, gloves, caps, and items that are for other people such as newspapers, magazines, egg cartons etc. so I don't forget to take them on errands.

I love these! I wish they had the mesh ones years ago. I hung one in my mudroom. The grands kept their slippers in it, and when they came to visit they would swap shoes for them when they came in. Also kept their extra sledding bits (mittens, caps) in pockets.
