Jean rag rug fraying

Question

I just made a rag rug out of blue jeans. How do I stop the mess of the frayed ends?

Fray check is just awesome stuff. It would be worth ordering on line, however all sewing stores/departments should carry this item. You should find it in a Walmart.

For fraying fabric, I have coated the edges with Fabric Mod Podge. Normally, I use just regular MP for just about everything. But, in the case of fraying, the Fabric MP is thicker and is a great sealant. Start off with just one coat. I apply it with my fingers. You can cut the frayed stuff off before and then seal. That's what I've done. I suppose you could do it after. It will be stiff and easy to cut. I'd be a little wary of that, because maybe the seal of the MP would be compromised. Just a thought on that issue. I've put at least two to three 'finger' coats on it. Just check with each coat, it doesn't make your rug look different from the rest. However, it is a rug and treating it would probably not make much of a difference in looks. Every once in a while, I'd just add another coat of the Fabric MP. Hope this helps. Hope you can get MP in Canada. I think any fabric decoupage product would hopefully work just as well. Good luck!

There is a product made for this. It's like a glue and it's for stopping freying of fabric. Walmart Carries it in their sewing department. Sorry I can't remember the name but it comes in a tube and it tells you what it's for on the front label. It works great and it was only like 4 bucks

Michael's, a big craft store here in Winnipeg, does not carry Fray spray nor does Walmart.I will call some of the other smaller sewing stores or order from Amazon.
