LIghtening cabinet colour

Can you use a glaze to lighten kitchen cabinets? I know you can darken cabinets with stain, but really need to lighten instead of darkening? Would love some input and personal experiences.

This will depend on what type of material the cabinets are made of.

They are solid pecan. I don't want to paint them but would consider a glaze or wiping stain

You can wipe on or dry brush on a white stain or glaze. A glaze will give you more time to work the glazing effect you want. The color of the cabinetry will still show through but will be a little lighter in appearance with a buildup of glaze around the details of the door. Depending on the condition of the existing clear coat on the cabinetry you may need to lightly sand first to give the stain/glaze to something to stick too. Finish w/ a coat of clear sealer or poly to protect it. I did this to my oak cabinetry that had a light gold stain and the effect was like a aged driftwood appearance.

@Valerie Bradshaw I am dealing with the same issue. The white oak cupboards that line my galley kitchen have darkened over the years while the beautiful white oak cupboards on the north wall of the adjoining dining area have remained much lighter. I do not want to paint everything white and am searching for an appropriate alternative. There are 24 doors and 8 drawers to deal with. I would appreciate more information on your process or other ideas to make both areas look the same. Thanks.

I have used both a white glaze and a pickling finish. I loved the pickling finish. Try them on an inconspicuous place to see how you like it.
