I have never seen one like this but I imagine it had a purpose. Maybe the old owner had a back problem or they felt it would be easier to rinse and load in that position and I could say it was a good idea
I agree, it was probably a (smart) modification. My counter tops are higher than normal and I love them, since I am tall and most counters are awkward for me to work on. No, a short person might not want them this way, but, most people seem to like working at them, including my shorter daughter. I would think it would be easier to service your dishwasher.
Wish I had that. It would stop the " I couldn't bend over to put the silverware and plate in the dishwasher" excuse I always get!
Love this idea, and I don't think it would matter much should the dishwasher leak for any reason down the road because the water would go down to the floor anyway. I can see this being advantageous for someone very tall.
What a back saver! I have read about raised dishwashers and laundry equipment but the only place I've seen a raised dishwasher was at a home modified for handicapped access. The stovetop was mounted with a knee well below and an adjustable height system that a wheelchair could fit and allow safe useage. The base cabinets had 9 inch toekicks for wheelchair clearances. The sink was wall mounted and clear of obstacles underneath.
Personaly, I wouldn't mind having my washers raised up to a more comfortable height. The only disadvantage I could foresee would be the interupted height of the countertop. If the dishwasher were mounted in the wall adjacent to the sink (similar way a wall oven is mounted), that might serve even better.
I have mine like this and love it. Just makes it alittle easier to unload and load. Nothing different than your washer and dryer on risers.
Yay! Lucky you! Save your back, no matter your height. I am tall and everything "standard" is far too low for me. Everyone I know that has done this for one reason or another, has loved it. I see "raised appliances" as a trend in the future just for ergonomic reasons.
I Sure Think it's Very Modern!!
sue clark (who used to be from west branch !) This idea was highlighted in a BHG series about 20 years ago about how to design homes for handicaps or ageing. I thought it was brilliant and really wanted to do it in the new house we were doing but it just wouldn't work in the space plus Hubby wouldn't alter the kitchen footprint. So 20+ years later he loads/unloads the on the floor dishwasher because my back problems won't allow me to bend over to do the job. That is poetic justice !
Great idea if you don't need the extra counter space. It is probably easier to service too. I wish I had one!
We had a raised dishwasher installed in our new kitchen and one at normal height on the island (I like to entertain and having two gets the job done. One set at china and one on pots and pans after holiday meal is a great plan. Our problem is the one that is raise has never run for more than a month -- then the drain mechanism fails. I personally am sure this is a faulty dishwasher. The one that doesn't work was a floor model, the other was ordered and is a year newer from the assembly line -- both were brand new. Has anyone known of a reason a raised appliance wouldn't drain? Dealer came out and fixed it repeatedly and claims it is its raised status that is causing this issue! I have had four back surgeries so the raised dishwasher and higher counter tops were among the many adjustments we made to this house for my handicap. This issue is the only thing I don't like about my kitchen. BTW my dishwashers are Boches and top of the line. Thank you for your imput.
I elevated my built in oven just like this and I loved it! I am now at the age where it is hard to get down and bend over to load and unload the dishwasher. When we get ready to remodel our kitchen I need to figure out how to do this. It is a very attractive feature especially for people who want to stay in their homes after retirement.
My retired parents built a raised dishwasher cabinet in their kitchen. They love it! If I could, I would do the same. They put a drawer below it for large baking sheet pans and other baking dishes. Their microwave cove sits on top with cabinets above it. Obviously, it's at the end of the kitchen cabinets.
My aunt had one put in her house a few years ago because she has back issues and she loves it.
I intentionally built mine this way due to a bad back. Wouldn't do it any other way. The only problem I found is , if you have to replace it, installers from Home Depot and Sears won't lift it in to install. I had to find someone to install for me.
