Can I grow elephant ear plants in NC?

All my neighbors have large elephant ear plants but when I try to grow them they die. Any suggestions ?

Yes, but in the Fall you must cut down the plant, pull up the roots/bulb, and keep them in a dry, dark place until the following Spring
Do you have them in full sun? They usually do better in at least partial shade!
They require shade and not to much water.
