Squirrels eating all my Loquat fruit! help!

I have a Loquat tree that I planted several years ago. It is finally making fruit. It appears that just before the fruit is ready to be picked squirrels get there first and have a feast. I believe in sharing but this is ridiculous! How do I prevent the invasion of these critters? The tree is located close to a fence that they use as a highway.

Oh Dear! There is not much you can do to stop squirrels! They can climb up into your tree or drop down from a taller tree to your bush...they can jump great distances from one tree to another.

I had a plum tree I anxiously awaited for it to get mature enough to bear fruit. The first year it was filled with fruit, the uninvited squirrels would grab a plum, take a big bite and throw it away...the ground underneath was littered with ruined plums!!!

I have never found a way to deter a squirrel from doing anything it wants to do!!!!

Years ago I used a product which I sprayed on young grape vines to deter rabbits. I don't recall the name but it was safe and had a taste the rabbits did not like. You might check with a local nursery or ag supply vendor to see if they have something which would work.

Sprinkle it with cayenne pepper, and/or place some pots of planted peppermint around in your problem area. Rodents are allergic to peppermint. Do not plant the peppermint in the ground or it will overtake your yard/garden!!!!
