How to paint a white enamel bed frame?

My bed is white enamel over wrought iron with brass trim (similar to the photo). I'd like to try chalk paint but am not sure it would stick. Any ideas how to prime?

  • Hi Kathleen - you don't need to prime with chalk paint. Just make sure the bed frame is clean first. I would seal it with a wax paste for protection afterwards. Good luck!

Does the bed frame have a varnish on it?

Not that I'm aware of. Just super high gloss white enamel paint.

@Kathleen farmer I would do some more research before you decide on using the chalk paint then. Sometimes when you do not know if the are any additional finishes on what you are painting could cause issues down the road. Foe example pealing.

I've used spray paint on iron beds several times. The best spray paint for cast iron I've found in the last couple of years is Rustoleum 2X. Great coverage and durability. Easy and inexpensive.

I have the same issue. I followed Janet Pizaro's advice and after researching more than a month, I'm still unsure.
