There is also a bleaching method, but I have never used it. I am partial to sanding and find it relaxing.
Use Citristrip a safe non-toxic remover
I use Kutzit. Need to do this outdoors or in an open area because the fumes are pretty bad, but the results are great.
About the only way to remove darker stain from wood is to sand it back down to bare wood. There's not any type of remover for this. But if there has been any type of polyurethane or clear varnish put on top of stained doors then you could use a stripper to remove it and then sand down to bare wood. I hope this helps. Good luck on your project!
Strip off the current finish with Citristrip (non-toxic) and take a look at the wood, if still not to your liking, you can sand it off.
Hi Marie, hope this helps you. Lightly sand stained doors to remove the surface finishing. This should be done carefully and with the grain of the wood, only removing the thinnest layer of the surface to allow the new stain to be absorbed. After sanding, apply the new stain as per the manufacture's recommendations.
If you want to paint use an oil based primer then paint the color of your liking. You will have to take the doors down as Oil based primer is stinkly and should be done outside.
