Did you finish the original project with a sealer over the mod podge? Like polyurethane or varnish.....if so, you should be able to paint over it.
If it is finished with the mod podge it should take chalk paint easily. Be prepared for the possibility that there may now be a texture which shows the edges of the paper underneath. If so, you can attempt a new leather finish with new paint or add your own decoupage on top of it. Good luck!
