Can I just chalk paint over this furniture?
You would need to prime first. Then apply a base coat lighter than the stain color. The use gel stain to create a wood grain affect. The stain will just get muddy and lost over the chalk paint.
Hi Donna,
It depends on the look that you want. Take a look at this tutorial from another Hometalk member. See if this will help. Wishing you the best.

Staining on top of chalk paint to create that wooden look...
If you want the table to look like wood again, you will have to strip the paint and then lightly sand before using stain.
You can use stain over chalk paint if the chalk paint has not been sealed with wax. If there is wax on the table it can be removed with mineral spirits but you have to make sure you get all the wax off so you don't have a blotchy job. Chalk paint is quite porous so you would have to work quickly. One thing you can do if the chalk paint has been sealed with poly is to try General FInishes water based stain. This will go over poly and it is fairly transparent dependent on the color you choose. General Finishes Gel stain is more solid so if you used the gel stain you would not see the chalk paint unless you wanted a more distressed look and you sanded so you could see both colors. I would try it on a chalk painted board first so you know what will happen.
I found some info about painting over chalk paint. Best of luck on your project.

Hi Donna, if the chalk paint hasn't been sealed with wax yet, you can apply wood stain over the chalk paint
You can but if unsealed but you will not get a true colour. For good reasons remove the chalk paint.
I'd remove it first if you don't want any peeking through of the chalk paint. I'd love to see the picture when you're done!
Depends on the sealer used on your piece. I wrote a tutorial on how to distress painted furniture that may help: https://do-daddy.com/how-to-distress-painted-wood-furniture/
I would advice using gel stain because it will stick to painted surfaces. You will need a stain that is darker than the paint or it might not work well. Lightly sand to make sure you have a smooth surface then wipe down with denatured alcohol for cleaning. Then you can stain.
I would recommend sanding and then staining if it is wood.
You could try gel stain but you should test that process on some scrap first as it likely won't get you the results you might be seeking. Your best bet is to strip off or sand the paint off and start over.
