Has anyone used hickory for an outdoor project? If so what kind of finish did you apply to it?

Hi Eric. Here's a great video to show you the different available options and what they'll look like. Hope it helps :)

I couldn't find hickory listed on any recommended wood to use for outdoor projects. You could try a heavy finish of marine varnish to make the wood more water resistant, but I imagine you'd have to reapply it on a regular basis and unless the project you have in mind is portable furniture that can be moved inside for storage during winter weather or bad storms, I wouldn't use it - more work than it's worth for upkeep and no guarantees it would last for a worthwhile amount of time.

I hope you finished it with some kind of protection from the elements if it's going to be sitting out in weather, even under a roof on a covered porch or a gazebo. If it has open walls, things will get wet from blowing rain or snow (if you live in a climate where it snows). Sounds lovely and you must be very talented to make such a chair. Next time, just don't use hickory wood :)
