My girlfriends daughter just did this! She found one she loved, so they just replaced the hinges with soft close type.

I wish I had gotten the locking hinges when my son was little....he got a lot of booboos that I had to kiss. Also another idea is, if the toy box is wood, put a long screw on each side, which will hold the lid open enough that little fingers will not be pinched. Might have to cover the screw with a wine cork or something so that it isn't sharp.
