Replace it. They don't cost too much.

Home improvement stores have a very thin product like ply wood that you could glue to existing door with liquid nails. I can't remember what they call it. I used it to redo a table drawer bottom that was broken.

Your answer from me is being supplied to you from another hometalker page I had read, where the person had a hollow core door and the veneer was peeling off of it. He wanted to know if he could peel the vener off and then sand it and paint it. Sound familiar? Here is the answer he received:

You could peel it off, but I doubt you will have much luck in getting a new smooth enough finish under the top layer Luan finishes use lower quality filler materials followed by the top layer that has no blemishes that is easily stained or painted, Removal of the top layer will expose lower quality material and adhesives that will need to be dealt with. A new door is only around $25 and about two hours to install with hinge installed and lockset. Simply place the old door on top of the new one and transfer the lines from the old hinges to the new door and then mark the old lockset hole onto the new door. This way it will match exactly when you install the hardware. If you need to cut the door down to match, use a razor blade knife and a straight edge to cut into the door surface on both sides. Then using your saw cut just below that knife cut so there is no chipping of the wood. A simple sanding will smooth the edge perfect and your ready for stain or paint. "

I hope this has been of some help to you. Anyway, with the price of primer and paint I think I'd just get the new door and follow the instructions from W.E.T. ;)

Maybe, lightly sand it and then paint.

It may be a better long term solution to replace it
