The Fun Part

After 5 days of sanding, I finally get to see the beauty that can come from doing proper prep.

This is a Red Oak Floor refinish for a client of mine. These pics shows the main living ...»

room area. Behind the two sided gas fireplace is an area a little bit smaller, off of that area is the kitchen and dining area. For the amount of area there was a ton of "edge" work...that is what really eats into the time...The stair treads were also done, again more detail small work. A simple room of this same size could have been done in a lot less time.

I want to install a new floating engineered hardwood floor over an existing hardwood floor. Do I have put down underlayment in between?

Well, thanks to every bodies advice we have decided against the floating engineered wooden ...»
floor and are looking into having the original floor refinished. However, from what I hear it is not cheaper to refinish than to buy a new floor. The cost is closer to 3 $ per foot.

I had a company come out here and look at the situation and now am waiting for an estimate. The company has done work in the neighborhood and has very good reviews.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: How do I protect painted floors?

We recently painted over our worn hardwood floors in the house, because we could not effort to have them refinished. We used a good porch and patio floor paint from BEHR, two coats in a walnut brown. It looks very good, however, it is so sensitive to scratches, scuffs and dirt. You see every footprint! If I wipe it with a moist rag, you even see the wipe! (It says its not supposed to get washed until it cures after 4 weeks). Is there anything I can do to protect the floor and make it ...»
less sensitive? Cover It with polyurethane? Or do I need to remove the paint and actually refinish the floor?

Thank you for your help. We have decided to go ahead and lay a new wood floor on top of it.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Do we need a new furnace?

Our furnace has been going out a few times over the last few weeks. The plumber told us after the first visit, that it wasa bad sensor. But then it happened again and we were told that if ...»
it keeps on happening it can be an internal problem and we need a new furnace (old one is 14 years old). Now, whenever the furnace goes out, my husband shuts off the power, moves the wires around on the furnace, turns the power back on and it works fine .. at least for a while, sometimes a day, sometimes 10 days. Any suggestions?

I changed my mind about getting a new furnace. Just can't afford it right now. The furnace ...»
stopped again last week and my husband got it started again.

I guess we will have it fixed sooner or later, probably sooner, because I think they will stop selling parts for the lower efficiency furnaces.

I want to use the duct sealant paste, which was mentioned. Can you recommend a certain brand? I saw that they have just one brand at Homedepot and it is allot cheaper than the brand I saw online, which was called Mastic. Which one are you familiar with, that is easy to apply?

Heating & Cooling: Cover or keep old whole-house fan?

I have a question: does it make sense to have a whole-house fan, the ones that are in the ceiling in a home, when you have air-conditioning .. or is it just a big cool-air leaking hole, ...»
that causes your temperature in the home to go up? We had one already in the house when we bought it. There was no central air in the house, but we installed it later. We never use it, but my husband wants to keep it for just in case.

We actually only have a tiny crawl space up there, so it will probably be hard. But I will ...»
give it a try. My husband thinks he can just put something between the louver and the fan to keep the air out. What do you think about that?
