Gardening: Can anyone Id this vine and how to get rid of it?

I have tried everything to get rid of it. It has invaded one corner of my yard...have tried all weed killers but to no avail.

Dog Bed

After many years of having dogs and contending with the yellow spots in the yard I came up with this idea to make it a little nicer to look at. I first timbered off an area off the back ...»
porch. Filled it with mulch and put in concrete pavers for the walkway. Then started planting shrubs and flowers inside the timbers and around the border of it. Made sure they were far enough away from the dogs MAIN area of use. Also put in a concrete fire hydrant for the male dog! Works great, no yellow spots. In the fall we also mulch leaves to put on top then wood mulch on that. Someone told me they decay of leaves helps to keep the smell down, it does work. Also I use the bed for starting shrub cuttings. Everything thrives in the soil. Maybe this will help others with the yellow spot problem. Have not put a roof on the back porch yet, thus the umbrella for the dogs.

For all you folks wondering about dogs peeing in your grass, if you start training them as ...»
puppies to go in the mulch, they will continue. My dog knows exactly what the word 'pinestraw' means when she's in the yard. It's another one of those 'ounce of prevention' things. Good luck teaching those older dogs new tricks, though!

Gardening: Shade loving plants??

I'm getting ready to start on my outdoor area so I need to pick everyone's brains. I have a bottom level condo with a really good sized outdoor area, but the problem is that there is ...»
presently nothing but gravel and a couple of bushes that are mostly dead. The way my area is situated only a small part of it gets about 2 hours of morning sun. For the most part it is shaded all day. I need advice on some shade loving plants. I would like to put in a couple of small trees, some bushes and grasses, perennials, and some annuals. I love flower plants and I want to draw birds and butterflies. I am planning to do a small water feature. I'm in Atlanta.

The one think that you didn't mention was whether or not the area was wet. That can make a ...»
HUGE difference in a shady area. Douglas has some good ideas for you. I'm a big proponent of mixed Fern and Hosta beds using both native and exotic ferns for a wonderful mix of different sizes, colors and textures. Since you're in Atlanta, you may want to swing by Georgia Perimeter College and take a stroll through their fern garden. George Sanko up there has a world class collection of shade plants. I doubt you're going to get any ornamental grasses to grown in that location, most of those are full sun animals. Depending on the soil, you might get Daphne to grow (which is a little finicky but smells AMAZING). A good go-to shrub for shade is Japanese Pieris, which will bloom white in winter, and loves some good shade. You might also want to look at some of the newer cultivars of Aucuba such as 'Picturata' for a backdrop planting.

Concrete & Masonry: We laid a slab for a huae today. The pumper layed it so wet that it is sagging in some spots. At about noon they wanted

rent a buffing machine. As they were floating it they were making it worst. I know of a machine with grinding stones that would make it somewwht flat. I left when they where renting the ...»
float machine because I thought It would just drop through the slab. This is a project for the homeless I thoght it would it would be better to float let it dry gring and float. By the way 1500 sq no mesh just rebar on the corners. Four feet above grade. #6 mud all at once??

I would reject the work outright as improperly completed. Poorly installed concrete is bad ...»
news all over the place. ANYTHING you do on top of it for the rest of time is going to be doomed from the start. If concrete is not mixed correctly, it will not be as strong as it should be. You paid for properly laid concrete. If you didn't get it, they still owe you a properly laid slab. If the concrete arrived in wrong proportions, that is their fight with the supplier, not your problem.
