Do you think this original Frank Lloyd Wright home should be demolished to build a new spec home?

In late May, the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy learned of a pending and potentially disastrous change in ownership for the David and Gladys Wright House in Phoenix, Arizona. Since then, ...»
working in the public arena and with national and local preservation groups as well as laboring behind the scenes, the Conservancy jumped into action to save the building and its site. Despite initial public statements by the new owners that they would not demolish the house, the developers have recently indicated that "it's not a given that the house can be preserved." With possibly less than sixty days remaining to secure the building's future the Conservancy is searching for a new owner and simultaneously working for local historic designation status.

This great graphic by Alison King, founder of the Modern Phoenix website was featured in the ...»
Arizona Republic newspaper today. Alison was very influential locally in the movement to save the David & Gladys Wright house.

Her site features a great overview of the movement to save the house. http://www.modernphoenix.net/index.htm

Painting: Does anyone have a recommendation for an exterior painter in Phoenix. Our rental house needs some TLC -

Is it too hot by May to paint the exterior?

HandyAndy, i started out in business as a handy man. Like you, I thought that many ...»
contractors charged too much. I have always tried t give my clients fair prices for quality pricing. My pricing in the early days was great, thankfully it didn't put me out of business!

Phoenix is full of people representing themselves as contractors when what they are are individuals looking for their next paycheck. Some of them have contractor licenses, some don't. Sometimes things work out, sometimes they don't with their work.

I am not saying that any of these workers mean to fall short. The reality is that our industry has a very high failure rate. The failure rate has nothing to do with ability to do good work. It is all about business knowledge.

Most quality craftsmen who don't charge enough will ultimately find themselves behind the eight ball and fail. One of the most repeated horror stories about our industry is about the "contractor" who takes money and disappears.

Most of these "contractors" were good men or women who felt that as long as they have work they are doing well, and doing right by their customers. Most of them were working steady the day they ran out of money in the middle of multiple homeowners projects.

Most homeowners who loose out in this situation think the "contractor" was crooked, the truth is that they were great craftsmen and poor businessmen.

My word of warning is to be ware of the great price!

  • We reused this Ikea sink and faucet from the existing bathroom and accented them with new glass subway tile to create an updated look for this 50s bathroom.
  • The original bathroom had a cross reed glass window so we decided to honor that with this cross reed glass block. 1

Do you mind if I share a few photos of a mid century modern bathroom we remodeled?

The original bathroom had served this home well for fifty years, but now the owners were ready to bring new life to this modern bathroom of the 50s. ...»

We installed a new tub and complemented it with the glass subway tile that comes out into the room to give the entire room a modern feel.

The rain glass on the window would work out great. We did another Mid century modern bathroom ...»
remodel where we did cross reed glass instead of the glass block. I think I like the glass instead of the block.

As far as kids in the tub,I think you may be better off with a curtin untill they get bigger.

    Thanks for your questions.

Remodeling: Does anyone like IKEA kitchens?

We helped our homeowner remodel his kitchen with IKEA cabinets in order to give them a mid century modern feel to their mid century ranch home. They loved it. What do you think?
