About Me:

While I would love to live in a "real" house, I dont. Mobile Home is what we have, an old one, but I love decorating sites, hgtv, DIY, that makes me want to do things that can't be done here. I am also a cat freak...love 'em.

Favorite area of home improvement:

Interior everything, garden...

DOLL HOUSE CREATED FROM CHEST OF DRAWERS

Almost 40 years ago we converted a discarded chest of drawers into this doll house for our daughter. It remains in our home for grandchildren to enjoy. I saw this idea in a magazine about ...»
the time a neighbor placed an old chest on the street for garbage collection. The one drawer that still existed was retained at the bottom for storage of extra furniture. Some of the furniture in these photographs was mine (1940's). Other pieces were added in the 1970's for our daughter and some later than that. The drawer keeps the assortment available for redecorating. During its early years, Santa with his sleigh and raindeers sat near the chimney at Christmas.

PHOTOGRAPHS SHOULD EXPLAIN THE RESULTS:

The top of the chest is an attic room. The front side of the roof is built in two pieces and hinged so that the lower portion can be lifted. It is held in place with an attached wooden prop (see photo). The roof is made with latticed wood strips, the chimney is painted with a brick design and trees and flowers are painted on the outside walls. For the floors we used carpet scraps for the bedrooms and the bathroom and a Formica scrap for the kitchen. My husband cut tiny pieces of wood and created a parquet floor for the living room. There are doorway openings between the rooms and a movable staircase. We added wheels for obvious reasons.

More Bluebonnets. A LOT more.

This pictures was sent to me by Bernice (for some reason it wasn't uploading on her computer.) It is the most wondrous sight I have ever seen. Many thanks to Bernice's friend Tamara in TX for sharing this picture!

  • Stunning
  • This is a simple, easy craft for kids and adults.
  • Any used food jars will work. Keep the lids! 1
  • Cover the jar with flat-bottom marbles using silicone sealant as an adhesive.
  • Attach the jar lid to a post or dowel using a wood screw. 1
  • But first hide a wish and tiny toys inside for a surprise later.
  • Check the jars every now and then. You never know when you might find a treasure!

How To Make Garden Treasure Jars

I started making these treasure jars when my kids were little and they wanted to make some garden art of their own. Because the jars remain functional, you can hide little notes and toys ...»
inside. Use them like little time capsules or part of a treasure hunt. And, of course, the covered jars look like pretty jewels in the garden.

1. Cover any used jar (keep the lid) with flat-bottom marbles (also sold as 'florist stones' or 'glass gems'). I use GE Silicone II sealant (clear, waterproof) as an adhesive.

2. Mount the lid on a post or dowel.

3. Attach the jar.

Notes and tiny treasures can be added at any time.

The Secret To Making Garden Art Flowers From Dishes

If you want to make garden flowers like these ones, you may want to add one little skill to your bag of tricks - drilling holes in dishes (glass, ceramic, metal). There is a complete ...»
tutorial on the Empress of Dirt site listed below.

Don't be afraid - it's a simple, slow process that takes a gentle touch, and once you know how to do this, you can make all sorts of other garden art projects as well.

It is also possible to make these just using silicone sealant as the adhesive but I prefer drilling holes and using wires to make it last through Canadian winters.

my dish flowers...

Well I FINALLY got them made. I am not very happy with them, I think they look stupid with pvc stems I didn't paint. (I should) But the hostas are coming up and will surround them so ...»
maybe they will look better soon. I think I also am going to move them back further, to the neighbors ' ugly house' to detract maybe from their peeling paint etc. Any suggestions as to how I could have done them better? Different plates, rebar? (Which cost more than the plates did!) This is my first attempt after seeing the great ones on Ht, and I was very leery. But FINALLYYYY! tada! NEW PICTURES.....hostas growing in, I am happier, doesn't look so barren now! Next ones will be green pvc or whatever! @KELLY, GAIL

Painting my dishes for tiers!

Well, I did something I have never done before , so you all can tell me if it is a good or bad idea. I had some clear dishes ,( part of my stock pile), but they weren't very interesting. ...»
So I decided to spray paint them with a "hammered" bronze paint, I let them dry overnight and now we will see if the glue sticks to the one I painted on the bottom of the plate, and if they chip with jewelry thrown on them. If anyone has a better idea...please let me know. At least they are more interesting , than the plain jane dishes they were.

The Easiest and Laziest Way to Clean Your Paintbrushes

I knew there had to be an easier way! After my parents cleaned my paint brushes for me one day and the bristles were all nice and soft, I just couldn't go back to using crusty brushes. But I still didn't want to put in all that work!

Quick Easy Way to Change Paint Sheen

I often find spray paint colors that I like, but they usually only come in gloss. Polyurethanes and polycrylic seem to only come in gloss or satin. One way I've found to change the sheen ...»
to a matte finish is to spray a light coat of matte spray as a last topcoat.
