About Me:

I live in the beautiful state of New Hampshire and write the blog 'Pieced Pastimes'. It is a mixture of my DIY, Tutorials, Home Decor, Crafts, Quilting, Sewing, Cooking and Repurposing projects.

Favorite area of home improvement:

I love to use found objects, vintage and antiques in my home decor. I love a home with character and find it can be the small details that really make a difference.

MOSS: the FREE floral friend!

when you live in the Pacific Northwest, moss is free. and abundant. (read as : EVERYWHERE) so i made good use of it... and even here in Southern California, there's moss growing in a ...»
shady corner of the front yard!

a few tips for working with moss:

*i've found that using a flat metal kitchen spatula works best for removing moss from your yard (or a field... but NOT a neighbor's yard!) without it breaking into pieces.

*when harvesting 'fuzzy' moss, shake it out a bit to remove twigs, leaves, and bugs. (nothing worse than transporting pests into your home!)

*i fill pots with styro nuggets or wadded plastic bags, a bit of potting soil, and then place moss on top. makes them lighter in weight - and with moss, drainage is not an issue. they LIKE wet feet!

*mist moss every day, and keep out of bright sunlight.

a few photo stylist tips:

*the miniature glass 'domes' shown in my photos here are actually upside-down stemless wineglasses (like Reidel O series).

*those sprouting bulbs you see in the photos here? FAKE. this photo shoot was done in january, before any tulips or daffodil bulbs had begun to grow. i used onions that had sprouted in a basket in my kitchen. :)

  • Assess the situation: does your fridge look anything like mine? Is spinach trying to escape from the crisper?
  • Gather plastic placemats (I used 6). These are easily found at big box stores (especially in Spring and Summer months)
  • Fit placemats onto shelves. Cut or layer them! Installation is easy!
  • Cut placemats into smaller sections for the fridge door. This is where condiments normally "party", so liners are helpful here.
  • Admire your colourful and beautiful fridge.
  • Should any food decide to get crazy, you can now just pull out the placemat and quickly wipe it down. No need to remove heavy shelves!

Make Your Own Fridge Liners!

the fridge easy and efficient. By installing plastic placemats onto shelves and into condiment containers, there is no longer any need for hauling out large, awkward shelves (which, let's face it, do not fit into most sinks). Simply slip out the placemat, wipe it down and re-install! Easy, efficient and - happily enough - kind of pretty!

Check out the blog link if you want to see the details on my "before". Trust me, it will make you feel better about your own fridge situation. #springcleaning
