Home Maintenance & Repairs: Gas heater makes a loud intermittent noise from filter doesn't stay up in place.

We are using the correct filter size and it happens when they are new and have been in use. The noise seems last about 3 minutes from the time the heater goes on and there's no noise when ...»
it goes off. We think the filter is flapping around until its pulled into a solid position. Can different brands of filters vary in size or construction some how?

The only real way the filter would differ from one manufacturer to another is in the actually ...»
material. A better pleated filter may create more resistance then the cheap ones and that could be an issue. Also if the filter is moving around then I have to assume it is inside the blower compartment and not in an external rack. This is less then ideal because most furnace manufacturers do not set the furnace up to have anything but an external rack. It is just lazy in my own opinion for someone not to install a rack because they hardly cost anything. You may have someone come out to give you a price on installing a rack for you.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Constant dust in the house, and I know it is comeing from forced hot air vent and the AC. How would one go about trying

to get rid of it and a financial leash? I do change the filter's regulary, but would it be worth attempting to save the money to have duct work properly cleaned out? Or should I just ...»
always carry a dust rag and wipe things down a couple times a week, which doesn't really bother me either?

I second the suggestion of using the 3M filters, it has been my experience that they are hands ...»
down the best you can get in a 1" application. They range in price some are as much as $25 but why don't you try one in the $15-$20 range and see if it helps. Also you may consider leaving the fan switch set to the on position for a few days at a time. The indoor blower can handle it, it wont effect your power hardly at all but it gives the filter a better chance to get the stuff out of the air. Hope this helps!

Home Maintenance & Repairs: HVAC maintenance service contracts worth the money?

We moved into a new home and had some issues with the HVAC that were outside my DIY husband's knowledge. They came out an did diagnostics and resolved our issue -- and tried selling us on ...»
their 2x a year program to come clean and maintain the HVAC. We have 3 zones, so they charge $189 for first + $80 for each thereafter + $80 for hepa type filters totaling $439/year. If we need any repairs or parts we would receive a 25% discount. Considering my husband is willing and able.. can we come close to caring for these units ourself to get the most out of the units lifespan, or is this a good (preventative) value?

I would say its a good idea to have them looked at/serviced and no its not something your ...»
hubby should try. That is a very high price for them though, get at least 3-4 prices and clarify. If they say they are cleaning things, what exactly are they cleaning? If they clean the coils indoor and out then the price is more reasonable but if by cleaning they mean hosing the outdoor unit off and brushing the burners for the gas systems off then that's not a big deal nor is it worth the additional money. Manufacturers and companies alike recommend a yearly service but in today's world it is not so much that they require maintenance, it is more of a preventative check to identify parts that may be problematic before they go bad.

Ruud and Rheem were better years ago, these days there builder grade units have many problems. ...»
How do I know? We installed them for 8 years and we stopped using them roughly 2 years ago....we are still handling warranty claims on them to this day. Do not even consider wasting your money on anything under the brand name Goodman. My personal favorites are American Standard and Trane which is essentially the same equipment made by the same corporation and as far as consumer reports goes I dont know which year Jan was looking at but the most recent listed these 2 as the top two on the market. I handle mostly service and have done so for 12 years, one thing I can honestly say is these are the best most reliable units out there in my opinion.
