  • A free-standing IKEA cabinet takes up residence next to the built-in hutch. 5
  • Open shelving has been installed on this wall.
  • Large white mugs at the ready for coffee, soup, oatmeal, or hot chocolate.
  • Varying shades of white and cream keep the kitchen light.
  • The built-in has the appearance of bead board on the doors and sides, and was the inspiration for adding bead board a little more than halfway up on the kitchen walls.

A Kitchen Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

My farmhouse was built around 1875 and so the kitchen doesn't have a lot of stock cabinets. Instead, we have freestanding pieces along with a roomy built-in cabinet. We recently added ...»
bead board to the kitchen walls and will soon add more open shelving as we have no upper cabinets. More info about the beginning of this project is on my blog. But for now, here are pics of what we've done so far, although the walls and trim will get a fresh coat of paint similar to the colors already seen. #Bestof2012 #MyKitchen

  • These are fun ways to display interesting things or to get organized and keep your counters cleaner.
  • I bought the clips by themselves and enlarged the mounting holes.  And I also heat-treated the clips to bring out the rainbow of colors using a MAPP gas torch.
  • Nuts, bolts and washers keep the strong clips firmly in place.
  • It's better to use stiffer license plates that aren't as easy to bend so the tension from the clips won't bend the metal on their own.

Teen's bedroom in an historic house, without a closet!

We found an early 1900's four door armoire on Ebay and painted it with Chalk paint. It was originally oak. Yes, you can make historic fun for the kids too.
