  • Improper irrigation. Count the number of heads.

We noticed a large amount of water running down the street gutter while working at a jobsite and walked up the hill to

see the source. The entrance to the neighborhood had the irrigation system running and the number of irrigation heads and choice of nozzles resulted in the massive overspray and water loss. Looking in the photo, you can see 6 of the 7 heads spraying into a very small area. We are not sure why there are 2 heads almost next to each other near the curb. This style of nozzle applies water at quite a high rate.

Here is more info regarding just how much water. ...»

This style of nozzle can easily push ~1.4 gallons per minute. With 7 heads in this small area, and a zone running for 10 minutes, a total of just under 100 gallons of water was being applied to this very small area. The other problem is that the volume is being applied so fast that the ground cannot absorb it, so it runs off and down the street. If the irrigation system is not on a regulator and is running at a higher psi, it will be putting out even more gallons in the same time period.

A proper fix would be to remove some of the existing heads and have maybe 4 heads for the entire area, allowing overlap of the heads. Then, the nozzles should be replaced with a different style that will deliver the water at a slower rate. There are nozzles that apply water at ~0.38 gallons per minute. By changing the nozzles, the water will be applied at a rate that the soil can accept more of it with less running off. The only remaining change will be to adjust the run time for the zone to apply a proper amount of water.

We hate to see water wasted in a way that is so easy to remedy.

This kind of thing goes on at so many private residences. Examples are folks watering fescue ...»
lawns during the summer in the middle of the day, and sprinkler heads watering the street. I personally think some regulation is necessary but even as a homeowner I can make modifications to my irrigation system that might be considered wasteful. How do you prevent that? We could have quite a discussion about this and I too am interested in what happens at the neighborhood entrance.. .

Outdoor Living: Dec. 14th Patio/Firepit update

As many of you know, we recently decided to re-do our back yard area and include a firepit. Happy to report that we are making major progress. With Coastal Rock Productions here in Charleston.

The designer showed up this week with cinder blocks---for us to lay out our design and measurements. I know I may be crazy, but his method of taking the time to display the actual size and shape of the design, based on my family/friends height measurements! Really? He ...»

actually took the time to invite Tim and I to sit on the mock up, stretch out our legs and check the direction of the angle where my chairs will be. After some minor tweeks--ready to move forward.

So far, so good...

Wanted to share some photos of a project we enjoyed working on in 2010.

The client wanted a decorative fence and gate at the end of their driveway. Another contractor had finished building the Japanese Tea-house inspired shed as we began working on the ...»
landscape design. The following is more detail on this project that we designed and built in-house for our client.

After several sketches and multiple ideas on the design and pattern for the fence and gate, we reached the final plan. As you can see in the photos, we designed a Cedar semi-private fence with lots of detail. The lower section has alternating sizes of vertical boards. The upper section offers the next pattern. A cedar shingle roof covers the fencing. Then we have the large walk-through gate with overhead cedar roof. The gate is built out of solid cedar with half-lapped joints and a custom inset using black bamboo.

The details continue in that there are almost no fasteners visible from either side of the fence and gate. We used construction methods that are typical to furniture building to hide the screws from sight. It takes longer to build anything this way, but the finished project is like a beautiful piece of furniture.

Wow, it blends but is a great focal point in itself. I really like the arbor.
