ANTS? Easy, Safe Solution!

An exterminator told my friend that when you begin to see ants, they are the scouts. Stop these and you won't have ants. My son discovered that if you spray them with Windex (or any other glass cleaner), they are exterminated. Keep after it for a while and you won't have ants. We have used this for years. 2 days ago our humming bird feeder leaked onto the concrete front porch...the liquid got down in the crack between brick and concrete so there was not way to flush it out. Ants ...»
appeared quickly, I sprayed them with Windex. Watched through the day and kept spraying them. Now ant free! Safe for kids, pets and environment! It is worth a try before you spend hundreds.

  • 4. German Chamomile improves oil production in herbs and improves flavor of onions and cabbage. You can also brew tea from its flowers.
  • 5. Scented marigolds keep the soil free of nematodes and attract beneficial insects like ladybugs.
  • 6. Nasturtiums make a great barrier around tomato plants, deterring squash bugs and trapping aphids. Nasturtium leaves and flowers are edible, making them a great addition to salads. 1
  • 7. Geraniums repel cabbage worms and Japanese beetles.
  • 8. Petunias repel leafhoppers, aphids, tomato worms. Like catnip, tea brewed from its leaves can be sprayed on your plants as an organic insecticide.
  • 9. Rosemary repels bean beetle, cabbage fly, cabbage moth and carrot fly.
  • 10. Mints deter white cabbage moths, ants, flea beetles, fleas and aphids. Make your own mint mulch and add to beets, giving them the benefits without the danger of invasive mint roots. 2

House Mouse

Light brown to black in color, small eyes, pointed nose, large ears, long tail and about 2 inches in length. The house mouse is the most common rodent pest in most parts of the world. The female mouse can give birth every three weeks to a dozen babies, that's 150 babies a year! Their diet consists mainly of plants & grains but they will eat meat & dairy products as well and require very little water to survive. House mice nest in and around structures, especially in stacked firewood, ...»
stones, bricks, leaves and other debris. They establish a territory near food sources, generally 10 to 30 feet from their nest. House mice breed throughout the year and often share nests with their "relatives". House mice spread disease through bite wounds and contaminating food & water with their waste products. They can also spread disease through parasites such as ticks, fleas & mites. These parasites bite the infected mouse and then spread the disease by biting humans, this is why controlling rodent problems are extremely important. Prevention tips include: 1) Eliminate harborage in and around the house. Do not allow piles of leaves to accumulate next to the home, remove any piles of debris, stones, bricks, firewood, etc. 2) Seal holes & cracks inside & outside the home. Mice can fit through a hole as small as 1/4 in length. 3) Mice eat 15-20 times a day, so never leave food out. 4) Empty garbage on a daily basis and keep lids on the trash cans. 5) Frequently clean up sheds, crawlspaces, attics, storage rooms & garages. 6) Install weather stripping on the bottom of all doors. 7) Keep the house clean and free of clutter. - If problems persist, contact a Pest Control Company for help.

OK, OK, Why pick on the little mouse. So ugly it is kinda cute. I had a light brown one move ...»
into my dishtowel drawer. I tried to be nice, you know! catch and release. This went on for about a month or so. I named him Charles. Charles had to go! Worse room mate I ever had. Pee'd on every thing, pooped every where. I got tough and set traps. Peanut butter, every mouse loves the peanut butter. After months of trying the live catch and release method, one night of set traps, Charles was gone. I scrubbed every drawer in the kitchen a million times. I am glad he is gone. Just ashame, I think he was a field mouse. He was much cuter then this little guy in the picture. I found where he had got into the crackers, cereals. I cleaned so many times while he was here, it was silly.

Gardening: What is this flower?

I know I planted this vine but I be darned if I can remember, or figure out, what it is. I love it because it is slow growing and even though I planted it in the spring it didn't start ...»
blooming until about a month ago. The long lasting flowers have held up well even though we have had several nights of freezing temps. I like it when I can find something that is pretty this time of year when everything else is dying.

My Flood Experience... hoping you don't need to use it.

Several years ago, the area I lived in received 17 inches of rain in 24 hours and the knee deep trout stream near my house turned into a monster. We were woken by my golden retriever in ...»
the middle of the night as trees crashed down around us. We had made no preparations. I heard the roar of a waterfall as it cascaded into my basement. First I hurriedly ran all our camping gear upstairs (cook stove, lantern, etc.), then valuables were cleared from the first floor. After just 20 minutes it became eerily quiet... the basement was full... no more roar of water. I was about out of time. Anything remaining on the first floor was stacked on countertops and tables. Next, I ran outside and tied up the boat, it was already floating away, and we might need it to escape later. I wore a rock climbing harness to do this safely in the waist deep moving water. After the flood there was mud everywhere. The remnants of an old deck was left in my yard by the flood. I salvaged the old decking and used it to make a temporary side walk to keep us out of the mud as we cleaned up. I got old fire hose the fire department had culled out for free and screwed it to the boards... so in my case we really could roll up the sidewalk at night. I later made several more of these walkways, using pallet grade white oak. This was published as a tip for staying clean at muddy construction sites, but it was inspired by disaster: http://www.finehomebuilding.com/how-to/tips/...

Our Under $100 Closet System IKEA Hack

We bought our house as a foreclosure and as such the previous owners had removed EVERYTHING! Bathroom mirrors, closets rods and shelves, all the things you take for granted. You don't ...»
realize how costly replacing all of that can be until you have to do it.

We managed a custom closet system for two closets under $100 each using the IKEA Billy bookcase and a few slight modifications resulting in a custom look that could've costed us hundreds of dollars more. Add a few shelves and bars in between two Billy bookcases and you've got yourself an easy DIY custom closet on the cheap!
