About Me:

Retired homeowner who likes to work on household and garden projects.

Favorite area of home improvement:

Almost anything that I am able to tackle; I have in the past fixed my leaky roof, installed dimmers and fixtures, lots of painting and am good at prep work, have always fixed my own leaky toilets. Only age is beginning to curb my ambition!

Cleaning & Organization: Best steam mop for tile floors? To clean and sanitize.

Opinions about best steam mop? Considering either Hahn or Eureka envirosteamer. both seem to have pros and cons. These two appear to steam at a higher temperature than others; ie: shark, etc. thanks for any input!

Cleaning & Organization: how to remove fans for cleaning in a viking hood model vwh4848 --can't get nut (?) off to pull grease covered fans out.

Not sure this is posted in correct place. I am trying to clean a 12 year old viking over the gas range hood. (48"). It has two fans in a tight space that need to be thoroughly cleaned ...»
of grease. I think that they are mounted in the casing with a nut that is completely round (can't get a grip on it) and about 1" in diameter. If I could get that off, I think I could pull the fan(s) off and clean them. This model is no longer made. Ideas?

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Kohler shower heads just dribble.

Two bathrooms in this 11 year old house have some kind of high end shower heads in them. There are two big fat heads at about chest level and the regular overhead showerhead. There are ...»
three rotating adjustment faucets, one is for temperature and the other two adjust volume and which of the three faucets turns on. In addition, someone has added (?) a handheld shower in each shower enclosure. I cannot get any of the three Kohler fixtures to work right. Also, the temperature regulator does not adjust the temperature. It is either very hot, or not hot, and it does not seem to make much difference how I turn it. Hot water does adjust OK in the tub and sinks which have separate hot and cold faucets. I have resorted to just using the handhelds and praying I can get in and out without freezing or scalding myself. Where do I even begin??

Thanks everyone! The plumber took off all of the heads and removed old, corroded screens ...»
opening up the flow in the heads. It all seems to be working just fine now. He said there was no "cartridge" in the temperature control -- that it does not work that way.

I assume it is OK -- still have to take my morning shower : ).

  • 3M Window Film

We had all of the windows on the front of our house tinted with 3M Window Film.

It has really helped with our electricity bill and keeps the house much cooler.

Hi -- I just came across this post and I see that the job was completed in April. I would ...»
like to add: I had this product in Arizona on a home with the energy efficient windows that are double paned with the gas in between the panes. While it is great for shutting out some heat, in my experience the application to these double paned windows can lead to failure of the seal and then the whole window glass needs to be replaced. The window repair people that I used would not put it on and stated to me that to apply it would void the warranty on these windows. This was just my experience but seems like one should explore the issue before applying the product to energy efficient windows.

  • Help!

I'm looking for something to put in this space as I do not want cabinets.

The space was for a 24' dishwasher, which I can no longer have in my condo.

The site recommended by Douglas Hunt is excellent! I have contacted two different certified ...»
arborists to examine my trees and give me an estimate on what needs to be done and the cost. I am told it can be done in stages if it is overly expensive for my current budget. Thank you so much! Jean
