Areas of Expertise

I have gardened extensively for more than 10 years in both the Hudson Valley (Zone 5) and the northeast coast of Florida (Zone 9) and worked professionally at a nursery in New York. My home garden was twice open to visitors as part of The Garden Conservancy's Open Days Program. My Florida garden focuses on native and Florida-friendly plants with the goal of a landscape that is both environmentally responsible and aesthetically pleasing.

Should the greenery of the peony be cut after it has bloomed? If so, when would be the best time to cut?

Gardening: I have two plum trees that definitely need help.

These trees were given to me as a birthday present 7 years ago. One has leaves but never blooms. The other blooms and has given fruit the last 3 years but the plums are really tiny and quite bitter. Any suggestions on how to improve them?

purchased locally? Plums grown here need to be cultivars selected for having lower chilling requirements. It certainly doesn't help that you plants have never gotten any fertilizer (there are plenty of organic ones). Here's a comprehensive look at growing plums from the University of Florida's extension service:
