About Me:

I am interested in pot gardening among lots of other things. I am looking for creative ways to re-purpose stuff that is functional and cool to look at. I am starting to collect small pieces of furniture to refinish either for myself or to maybe sell to make some extra cash.

Favorite area of home improvement:

I don't have a home of my own again yet, only renting for now but will be interested in anything to do with manufactured home improvements.

How to make your very own Cold Process soap!

Making your own soap is one of the most satisfying DIY projects you can do. It's healthy, it's luxurious, it's affordable, and homemade soaps make wonderful gifts! The "Cold Process" ...»
method of soap making starts with combining lye and water to create a "lye solution". The solution needs to drop below 125 degrees before mixing it with oils which results in a chemical reaction called "saponification", creating the substance we call soap! After that, you add your scents, exfoliants and all that other fancy deliciousness to personalize your bars to your heart's content! Check out my full blog post for an extensive (but easy to follow!) tutorial for beginners that includes a "Beginner's Recipe" using oils you can easily find at the grocery store! Coconut Oil, Olive Oil and Canola Oil are some of the affordable and moisturizing ingredients you can use to make a great batch of soap! I predict that you will fall in love with soap making and never turn back to store-bought!

still in decent condition and I can't afford to spend much money on updates. I don't know what paint would be the best to use; especially the contact paper type stuff in my bathroom nor how to prep them for painting. I also don't want to make a major deal out of this project either.

DIY Laundry Detergent Recipe -- Really Works!

I made laundry detergent from washing soda, baking soda, Borax, and castile soap. Here's the recipe: Now you need to measure with a tin can (just a regular tin can, like the kind that ...»
corn comes in). In a large container with a tight-fitting lid, mix 3 cans of Borax, 3 cans of baking soda, 3 cans of washing soda, and an 8 ounce bottle of castile soap. I found that stirring didn't work very well, so I put the lid on the container and shook it up really well.

I have been really pleased with this detergent. Dissolved in hot water (it is not as good in cold water), it actually removed stains and oils, and it makes the laundry smell really clean and fresh.
