About Me:

I and am an artist & student in the criminal justice field. I enjoy home renovations and design, cooking, and having as much time with my kids and grand kids as possible.

Favorite area of home improvement:

I am currently building Shoji screen sliding doors for my bedroom closet, and painting an entire 8 x 11 wall with a black, grey, and white mural. I turn out about 2-3 paintings a week for friends and family that are usually 4' x 4'. My next project is a Shoji screen for my bathroom door, hall closet doors and free standing Shoji screen planter/ wall for my living room filled with real bamboo.

From Flower planter to dining room light

I re-purposed a black iron flower planter into a ceiling light fixture for my dining room. The landlord does not allow structural changes so this is mounted to the ceiling to cover the existing fixture. The wedges are actually light blue marblized paper.

doesn't allow, like painting the walls, so I have actually bought 4x8 sheets of insullation styrofoam and spot glued (with a hot glue gun) the styro to the walls, and painted it to look like marble, sone murals, and just plain painting to change the walls. Hint: only use hot glue if the walls are painted with at least semi-gloss paint. If it is flat finished wall paint, hot glue will tear the paint off. On a semi-gloss finish, the glue peels right off without leaving a mark. I have a couple of posts of paintings I have done on the styro and even a marbled wall I painted. Check them out and see how well it worked.

mild aabrasive that will tend to 'pit' the finish and that leads to the finish literally coming off over time. Vinegar water is a good degreaser for varnished wood.

DIY Subway Art

Subway art has been big in home decorating for several years and I'm still seeing it in a lot of places. You can find signs at a lot of home stores or shops with messages that you like, or you can make one yourself using a quote or poem or even names of places that are meaningful for your family. I made this one using a schmoopy poem that I wrote several years ago. The poem is ...»

Gardening: I live in a 1930's Arts & Crafts bungalow that has a small window in the attic on the front of the house.

I thought it would look nice if I put a light behind the window to show off the colored panes. After much deliberation and execution, I decided to hang a 100 watt "squiggly" light bulb ...»
