My half bath makeover

We bought our house just before Christmas. The half bath had this awful purple paint with a pink sponge paint over it.

  • Before I came up with the simple solution - I was one of those people chipping away and cussing out loud! This way takes forever! you get slivers, its a MESS!
  • Laying the towel down.it Was a very thick towel and dripping wet when I put it on the pieces
  • one or two test runs in the morning reveals - very little muscle power at all and it was peeling right off!
  • Slicing through that crud like a hot knife through butter!

How to Strip Veneer - no fumes, no power tools, EASY!

So simple, so easy! I have been trying to tackle the messy job of chipping veneer off pieces to re finish them and what a pain in the hiney! I thought of an idea, and while I was testing ...»
the theory, I asked our lovely facebook followers their favorite method. Well, pretty much everyone said either using a wet towel and an iron ( which wrecks both the iron and towel) OR use a heat gun - (which would then have the fumes from the adhesive floating up in your face - or house and then requires use of masks and such) SO Here you go. Very easy - SOAK a towel so it is dripping wet in a mixture of half water and half vinegar. Place it on the veneer. Have a girls night out and let it soak over night. Make sure it is SOAKING wet. I even went back later and used a water bottle and just poured it right onto the towel to make sure it was soaked! Come back in the morning and use a putty knife or chisel and it will peel up like butter! #StrippingVeneer

There's a lot going on in this room, but it's organized and a great work space. #bestof2012 #OrganizedHome

  • I heart Mason Jars OR 1001...
  • Before: Pink walls and green carpet and leftover "stuff".
  • I ripped up the carpet and painted the walls Martha Stewart Sharkey Grey and the trim Westhighland White by Sherwin Williams.
  • I wanted those really cute industrial shelving units you see everywhere but my budget wouldn't allow it. I thought these had a similar look to them. Found them at Home Depot and when I found out they hold up to 4,000 lbs I was sold!
  • I didn't want a run of the mill craft table. I wanted something that I didn't care if I got paint or stain all over it. I needed something tougher. I thought why not stick a workbench in there! 2
  • I used rattan and wicker baskets I had lying around the house. I really do have a basket hoarding problem. I found locker baskets on Amazon really cheap! 1
  • I found the metal bins at Home Depot and thought they would be the perfect addition to underneath the work bench. 4

Empty nested bedroom turned Craft Room

Over the years I have used every room in my house to paint, sand and stain everything from kitchen cabinets to furniture. When my youngest moved out on her own I was left with a lot of ...»
tears and a lot more room!! I bought a work bench from a local carpenter to use as my craft table. Bought shelf systems from Home Depot and split them up into multiple shelf systems. I use old apple crates and wire baskets for storage. It's such a fun space and I now have one room in my house where I know where everything is and I won't have an inch of sawdust on my dining room table. Please feel free to stop by my blog and see the entire post with a lot more pictures!

Living room

This is my country-coastal style living room that we renovated last year. Since this is our first home we really are on a shoestring budget and all our renovations are DIY. This room was ...»
one of the biggest selling points for us when we first viewed the house as it's bay window and vertically joined claddling lends itself perfectly to our country coastal style of decorating.

Our crisp, white slipcovered couch is one of the few new items of furniture in the room with the rest being thrifted and upcycled, usually with a coat of beachy white paint. I also love to decorate with stone and white, soft blues and aquas, stripes, polka dots and a whole lot of white.

As you can see the living room was extremely brown when we moved in. Firstly we painted the walls in Dulux Fair Bianca half strength, changed out the curtains, pulled up the carpet and retiled the floor.
