I'm a mom with 3 young sons, ages 6 and under. I have a "9-to-5" as a research coordinator, but the artist in me comes alive from 9 p.m. - 1 a.m. I live in the Maryland DC metro area.

Favorite area of home improvement:

I'm passionate about creating, and my love of thrift stores and second-hand, along with my blog, is the perfect platform for my love of creativing and inspirting others!

  • Here's the finished dresser with numbers....creating a fun, vintage look!
  • I painted in each of the numbers with a slant tip paint brush. Try to stay in the lines!
  • To create visual interest...I turned the numbers upside down and right side up.
  • Print out the numbers and trace onto the drawer fronts with graphite paper.
  • I used standard acrylic paint and sealed the project with polycrylic!

Painted Dresser With Numbers

I love this dresser so much and it's a really fun project for a playroom or rec room! It's been on my to-do list ever since last fourth of July when I first painted it gray and distressed ...»
it and put it in the upstairs playroom. It never really looked right.

It looked....well....it looked....gray.

Gray with red numbers is so much better. :)

  • My thrift store French Provincial desk, perfoect for a little girl! Painted with Annie Sloan Paris Grey and Pure White! This desk was only $12!!
  • Ugly, dirty, but I saw its potential. For $12, it would have been a sin to walk away :) The top drawer was missing a knob.
  • I filled the existing knob holes and drilled single knob holes in each drawer so that I only needed 2 knobs, since the 4th one was missing. Problem: SOLVED! :)
  • Grey and white is such a fresh combination!

The Makeover of a French Provincial Desk

http://www.ThriftDiving.com - I found this French Provincial desk at the thrift store and knew it would look GREAT with a beautiful grey and white color combonation! I used Annie Sloan ...»
Paris Grey and Pure White, and kept the existing hardware. The back of it had some damage, so I repaired it with MDF boards that I had found on the side of the road in a trash pile. :) See the blog post for a lot more pictures of the whole process, along with my 3 "Lessons Learned" from this project :) Thanks!!

    Hi Laura! ...»

Yeah, this furniture is so much a part of the 80's childhoods, isn't it?! I think with a coat of paint it can be so pretty! glad I could inspire you! :)

Working with Oil Based Paint

I tried my hand at painting some pieces with oil based paint recently. I had always been reserved about using it on my projects in the past. I conquered my fears with Rustoleum Enamel in ...»
Hunter Green. Im so excited with the results and that I finally got some gorgeous emerald into a couple spaces. Check out the blog for more details.

Oh, another negative to chalk paint (Annie Sloan) is the limited colors, although they can be ...»
mixed together to create more colors. Or, you can make your own DIY chalk paint, too, using latex paint, for more color options.I think you've got me curious now about chalk paint with a coat of poly on it. I think I will have to try it in my next project! :)

  • I picked up this thrift store desk last year for a "whopping" $28! It's SOLID and heavy! I gave it to my mom a few months ago, and didn't care about paint until last week when she asked me to paint it for her Mom's Day gift :) SURE!
  • It turned out amazing! The top has vintage leather panels that enhance the lightly distressed look. We used Annie Sloan "OLD WHITE" and used Rub 'n Buff on the handles.
  • There's me and my mama! She loves the desk!
  • She wanted to brighten up her little corner of her living room, where the desk sits. After a coat of white, I think we accomplished our goal!
  • Mom's never painted furniture before, but she did a great job!
  • But what was HILARIOUS was this: I looked over and saw that she had left all the stuff in the drawer while she painted! HA!! I need to try that "slacker" tactic next time! LOL
  • Here's the worn, dirty top. I love it now!
  • The front part was chipped badly, so I used wood filler to try to even out the uneven-ness. :)
  • See! Now you can't even notice! Love the magic of wood filler! :)
  • Now this....yikes...the handles were horrific! Tarnished beyond tarnished. But guess what? Rub 'n Buff knocked it out!
  • Here's the "AFTER" of what Rub 'n Buff can do!
  • You can buy various colors on Amazon, for about $30 for a whole set. Guess what I'm buying next?? ;)
  • Even more dramatic when laid side by side, huh?
  • Pretty! Now, you may not have noticed, but we're kinda MISSING a handle. Got lost in the transport to Mom's. OOPS! Suggestion: Put middle drawer handle where the one is missing, using a decorative one on the middle drawer instead! :)

A Distressed Thrift Store Desk: What my Mom asked for, for Mom's Day!

http://www.ThriftDiving.com - When your mom texts you asking you to skip out of work on a Thursday and drive over an hour to come paint an old thrift store desk for her Mother's Day gift, ...»
you oblige. :) We don't get much "mother-daughter" time because my 3 young boys are always in tow and sometimes you can't even hear yourself think with their noise level, much less hold a conversation with your mom. So we kicked back, ate pizza, and painted a sturdy old thrifted desk that I gave her months ago! Thanks for checking out my project!

  • A lamp makeover! I love how it turned out! I spray painted a thrift store hookah and made it into a lamp. Then I dribbled puddles of spray paint over the side in pink, turquoise, and green apple, for a colorful look!
  • I found these at the thrift store for $5.00 each. I think they're hookahs, but I have no idea! But I loved them. They were heavy and hollow throughout, so it would be easy to wire for a new lamp.
  • BEFORE: Cheap $10 lamp shade from Walmart, and the $5 hookah from the thrift store
  • Spray paint. To get puddles of paint, I sprayed a heap of paint on a piece of folded paper and drippled it over the side of the lamp shade.
  • I love the random splatters and drips of color!
  • It even looked cool at night!
  • For now, I've got the lamp "hidden" on the top of my Ikea Expedit book case so my kids don't destroy it! :) Once I get my craft room complete, I'll find the perfect spot for it!
  • Overall, I'm happy! Total cost was about $24, which includes the lamp shade ($11), the lamp kit ($9), and base ($5). The spray paint I already had on hand, so no real cost there. Not too bad for a custom lamp!

A Coloful DIY Lamp Makeover!

room, but I wanted something different than anything I have seen. So I decided to take puddles of paint and drip them over the side of the lampshades. It reminds me of colorful confetti, and I love it!

  • A $2.50 wooden play kitchen from the thrift store gets a makeover!
  • I lined the doors with vintage fabric from a thrift store table cloth, and used cup hooks to hold thrift store measuring spoons.
  • It had potential, right?? Most people just walked right on by it. Good for ME!
  • I wanted something that wasn't too "girly" or too "kiddy." So I chose Annie Sloan Antibes Green, which gives it a retro feel. I kept the existing red handles. It worked with the colors!
  • I used Annie Sloan Napoleonic Blue inside, which was the perfect compliment to the Antibes Green. All the inside metal bowls came from the thrift store, as well.
  • Annie Sloan Napoleonic Blue. Isn't it a DIVINE color?!? Love it! Dries a shade darker.
  • Cup hooks on the side allow kids to store measuring spoons and a towel.
  • YUCK. That's all I can say. LOL
  • The plastic burner stickers were peeling off and in bad shape.
  • I removed the stickers and lightly sanded out the sticky parts.
  • I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut new vinyl burners. Easy!
  • I used Mod Podge to glue down panels for the door.
  • A close-up of the vintage table cloth used.
  • I had bought this from the thrift store about 6 months ago and had never used it. Was probably going to make pillows from it or something. But after starting this project, I realized this would be perfect for lining the doors.
  • I cut my own trim and glued it down to the doors with Gorilla Glue. See the blog post for a short video on how NOT t use Gorilla Glue ;)
  • There are my 3 boys playing with the new wooden play kitchen! Making "Cheeriors stew." LOL

BEFORE & AFTER: The Makeover of a Wooden Play Kitchen

I found this beat up wooden play kitchen from the thrift store for only $2.50! I knew immediately it could be beautiful! I didn't want it to be "girly" or "kiddie" so I chose Annie Sloan ...»
Antibes Green for the outside, and Annie Sloan Napoleonic Blue for the interior. I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut new vinyl burners, and I mitered trim to make panels on the door, which are Mod Podged with fabric from a vintage table cloth from the thrift store. I also added cup hooks to the side for measuring spoons (which are also from the thrift store!). For more pics and VIDEOS of the whole processes, with more detail, you can find it on the blog post. Enjoy!
