  • A big bunch of lilacs are tucked into an enamel pot. No need to arrange in a formal display, just let them spill over the sides.
  • Flowers always look good in white ironstone. The soft lavender color is perfect in a classic white pitcher.
  • Flowers always look good spilling out of a basket. Put a watertight container in the basket before filling with flowers. Just make sure the basket is large enough to hide the water container.
  • Tuck lilac stems into a house plant. Simply place the lilacs into bud vases filled with water before placing.
  • A small bunch of lilacs hangs from a decorative shelf bracket using crinkled seam binding. Use this effect for short-term decorating and then place the flowers in water as soon as possible (re-cut the stems before doing so).
  • This corner of my farmhouse kitchen shows several groupings of lilacs. Grouping like items together always packs a greater punch in a room.

Chicken Feeder Turned Planter

I've been wanting to do something with a chicken feeder for a while now, so I was super excited when I found one this weekend. I hatched a plan to turn my chicken feeder into a planter ...»
(had to get at least one chicken pun in here). Totally not my very own original idea, but still a fun one.

On a side note, I washed it out thoroughly before I planted in it.

Nautical Style Furniture Makeover

#SummerStyle. The large chest of drawers I purchased at my favorite junk shop was pretty shabby. It had gouges and cuts in the top ...»
and was missing hardware, so I decided to really make it look worn......but in a good way. I went with a nautical look. I uploaded several pictures here but I have more on my website plus all the makeover details.

  • This quirky, double wide sized pallet wood chair is all decked out, ready for a great summer read.
  • Two pallets, 4 legs and two armrest boards are really all it took. So easy! The trick is to ensure you find two pallets that are similar in size.
  • Let's add more quirk to make it totally yours! This signboard was used as an armrest. Note how wide the board is... perfect for my coffee cup. Priorities here...
  • This leg has an antique level attached. This project is a little like 'Where's Waldo's Wild Additions?'
  • Pallet markings were celebrated by placing them in prominent places. Coffee bean sacks acting like large pillow cases were just tucked in place. No sewing required. 2
  • For the legs, a little bracing was required inside the pallet so the leg had something to stabilize against.
  • Tell me that isn't one big cool chair to curl up in! But let's add some comfort...
  • 5" foam cut to size (new from a foam shop) was key for the ultimate comfort.
  • This is a pallet SOFA I made last year, decked out in total bohemian style craziness. The build is much more size customized: http://www.funkyjunkinteriors.net/2011/08/how-i-built-pallet-sofa-part-2.html

pallets and little more. I kid you not! This is the easiest build in the world and you'll wonder why you didn't think of it first!

Ingredients for a Summertime Front Porch:

It's not hard to create an oasis on a front or back porch -

1. round up a few comfy chairs or a lounge, maybe a swing. ...»

2. add a table to hold a glass.

3. pop in a few pillows and a splash of color in an accessory or two.

...and you have your OWN summertime retreat to enjoy!

Once upon a time, I lived in my dream house. And that dream house had a wide front porch that just said 'Summertime'... It was the perfect place to hang a swing, where I could sit and work or just relax. Add in a few patriotic decor details and a refreshing summer beverage, and it was truly my haven, my retreat. I enjoyed that porch in every season, but especially in summer!

These photos were included in my 'Sweet ReTreats' column in FOLK Magazine's Issue V, Summer 2012. #SummerStyle #OutdoorLiving
