About Me:

I worked for the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension for thirty years. I've been the host of a weekly garden radio show on NewsTalk WSB in Atlanta for twenty years. I write a weekly gardening column in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and host a weekly garden TV show (www.yoursoutherngarden.com). My website (www.walterreeves.com) contains thousands of short articles and gardening Q&A's for Southern gardeners.

Rose Rosette

Rose rosette disease is devastating to roses and will be extremely hard to control if it becomes widespread. Now is the time you might notice it on new growth. ...»

The disease causes very red foliage and stems, copious thorns, "witch's broom" at branch ends and eventual death of the plant. It seems to be spread by tiny mites that travel on the wind. The only cure for it is to pull out and destroy affected plants.

Carpenter Bee Trap

I wanted to hold off on posting this until I got some successful responses but it does look like DIY carpenter bee traps work. Google "No Sting Bee Trap" for a video but here are some examples sent to me by folks who've made one themselves.

Eliminating Sweetgum Balls

  • We have a winner! Wright's did the job much better than any shortcut ever could.
  • As seen in the photos, the Wright's cream combined with some elbow grease is the clear winner, while the homemade jewelry cleaner left a piece of my silver tarnished forever. (on left)

Silver Polish Test: Pinterest Homemade Jewelry Cleaner Recipe vs Wright's Silver Cream

I put a popular homemade jewelry cleaner recipe that I found on PInterest to the test against my old trusty stand-by, Wright's Silver Cream. The homemade recipe called for heated water, ...»
baking soda, salt and aluminum foil. The chemical reaction smell gave me a headache all night.

1. Vase 1 is the 'before' image for the group. They all looked like this before the experiment began. Shameful, I know.

2. Vase 2 was left to soak the BOTTOM HALF ONLY in the Homemade Jewelry Cleaner (HJC) for 10 minutes.

3. Vase 3 was cleaned with Wright's Silver Cream 100% and didn't touch the HJC

4. Vase 4 was soaked completely in the HJC for 10 minutes and rinsed with clean water.

5. Vase 5 was soaked completely in the HJC for 10 minutes and then scrubbed with Wright's Silver Cream.

I think you can see a clear winner here. The one that I polished by hand with the Silver Cream is gleaming and beautiful.

It was likely a silver plated piece, but I didn't know that before I gave it a chemical bath. These vases were a memento from my wedding in 2004, so I can't replace them.

The moral here? BEWARE of homemade pinterest recipes on heirloom, mementos or expensive items like jewelry... It might not work exactly like you'd hope.

Building an Indoor Greenhouse

I have an unheated sunroom and I needed a warm spot to start seeds and keep houseplants. I ended up making a small indoor greenhouse using PVC pipe and clear plastic sheet! Details at http://www.walterreeves.com/how-to-archive/i...

Brown Marmorated Stinkbug

I don't mean to whine, but these creatures are the very devil to manage! I know they have been a problem getting into house in the Northeast but now they have invaded my home state of Georgia. I've collected some information on identifying and managing them here.
