About Me:

I am a retired RN, a Master Gardener for one and a half years; I have twin girls who are seniors in separate colleges and we have paid our last 'payment'; of course empty nester

Favorite area of home improvement:

yard work of course and hardscaping. I have to do whatever the dogs and cats tear up. I have painted most of the interior and mostly with 'electric paint system' but hate to paint. Love to make the ugly go away. May have to paint floor where dark 'animal' spots are - a decorative area, as if to paint a rug on a wood floor.

A new kitchen inspired by an ad from 1959

I love my mid-century house by the beach, but I've always regretted the fact that the previous owners ripped out the original kitchen and put in one of those characterless and cheap ...»
oak-trimmed laminate kitchens that for some inexplicable reason were so popular in the 1980s. When I finally bit the bullet and decided to re-do the kitchen, I wanted to create something that was appropriate to the house and found my inspiration in a 1959 ad for a Hotpoint kitchen. It was both practical (tiled walls) and handsome, with a great punch of color from a tiled accent wall containing the turquoise (!) wall oven. While I ultimately decided a wall oven wouldn't work for me, and I went for the durability of stainless (the salt in the air is tough on things here at the beach), I think I've ended up the with a kitchen that honors the inspiration, and my home's history.

  • This is the finished bench. The colors remind me of a gypsy wagon. I toiled over the colors for a year and finally was inspired by the color on a plastic tumbler. I took it to the lumber yard and they matched the color. 23
  • This is the bed how I bought it from the thrift store for $35.00.
  • This is the bed with the footboard turned upside down and it fashioned into a bench before the painting started. 3
  • Got it all sanded and primed and still had no idea what color it was going to be. 1
  • First color. Deciding what should be what color was the fun part!

Milk Paint Dresser Rehab

I found this great dresser in an old barn, but was completely filthy and needed a lot of work. A sunny afternoon, a little elbow grease, and some milk paint helped bring this dresser back to life!

  • Herringbone treatment on vintage dresser. I used ASCP Old White and homemade blue chalk paint to give this dresser a bit of style.
  • I love the contrast of the blue and white with little bits of stained wood showing through!
  • The original hardware was left on to give it a more authentic look.
  • I love little details in pieces like this. You just don't see much of that in new furniture these days.
