  • After- two coats of paint and top coat. I followed the directions on the Lacquer and added light coats, not heavy because the lacquer will turn white. 6
  • Before- Oak cabinets and island. Baltic Brown granite- 2
  • Supplies & Steps: Clean, tape, paint and top coat. Maison Blanc, Wrought Iron was the color I chose. It is a true black without dark wax.
  • First coat- no priming or sanding needed,
  • After two coats- a little touching up needed and then I'll top coat this piece with Annie Sloan's Lacquer.
  • Sorry for the shadows, on the island, in the photo. I'm thrilled that I chose this paint! I had a bid for $1200 to paint this black. The paint was $44 and the Lacquer was $60- quite a savings. 2

Painting An Oak Island Black

I have used several different types of chalk paint and this was my first time using Maison Blanc, La Craie. I love this paint! It's goes on velvety smooth and self levels! It dries to a ...»
flat finish. Wrought Iron is a true black that does not require dark wax to achieve the black finish. Woo hoo! I have received no compensation from this company.

  • See all the crackling and crazing in the rubber? 10
  • Assemble all necessary cleaning products: Drink - yep! Bleach, all purpose cleaner, rubber gloves etc.
  • Have resident "handyman" aka my hunny pry off old rusty rim. He says "piece of cake - BIG screwdriver should pop this loose!!
  • Grrrrrrunt . . . . .prrrrry and whack!!!
  • OK, time for the big boy toys . . er tools!! Let's try a crowbar, that oughta do it!
FINAL SCORE: Rusty Rim 1
Hunny & Tools 0
Time for Plan "B"
  • STEP II: Paint entire tire - RIM INCLUDED in your choice of base color. Remember this pic - it made it's debut as a Plant Stand when I featured my Hydrangeas!! Surely this tire has a more prestigious future - remember the crazing? 4
  • My helper using nut picker to dig dirt out of treads. WHAT?? Just cuz it's a tire doesn't mean it should suffer w/unsightly treads!! Just wait . . . . . .
  • Well of course I painted the treads. I mean, just look @that pretty chevron design and besides . . . you didn't really think I'd pass up this tedious opportunity, DID YOU??
  • TA DA!!! ;~) The LEOPARD TIRE PLANTER - now you know WHY I was soooo obsessed w/the cracks & crazing. It just SCREAMED make me something really special!!!
  • STEP III: Prepping the planter. Styrofoam peanuts for drainage and no added weight like gravel would do!! 1
  • Add soil & plants. Hen & chicks plus the cutest lil cactus (cute, but it bites)
  • Dress it up with some pretty white granite gravel. 3
  • Perfect fit - right in the middle of our never used glass table on the deck - what a centerpiece!! 2
  • But . . . . . then I decided the front porch would be better if I didn't want to roast it so it ended up on an old milkcan!! 3

THE LEOPARD TIRE PLANTER

STEP I. Find yourself an old tire - preferrably w/o the rim!!

Spaghetti Jars for the win!

Classico brand jars are rather adorable when you take the labels off! And they come in various sizes: pesto, pizza, alfredo, and marinara sizes.

Pallet Solutions-Dining Room Wall Cabinet

The Problem

Our new home has an extremely small kitchen with very little space for storage. This is a huge problem for someone that has tons of dishes, pans and gadgets and up until now I've stored them on shelves in the basement. Storing them in the basement works until I need something in a hurry and have to climb over plastic totes and boxes to find things I use periodically. Plus the lighting isn't the greatest which creates a real challenge in the evenings.

  • My Cardinals love this cute DIY Terra Cotta Bird Feeder! 1
  • Gather these easy to find supplies: Terra Cotta Pot, Saucers, Picture Hanging Wire, 5" Eye Bolt,2 Nuts, Fishing Swivel, Branch & a water bottle! Soak your terra cotta in water over night to make drilling the holes easier... 1
  • You have to drill several holes in the pots/saucers and to do this you'll need a drill with a masonry bit. After soaking your terra cotta and marking your holes, slowly drill over markings applying steady pressure as you drill. 3
  • The water bottle will be your seed reservoir- Cut the top off your water bottle so it fits inside the pot. Mark holes to line up with the drilled holes in the terra cotta...using an exacto knife, cut out holes in water bottle-
  • Now simply connect all the pieces with your eye bolt and heavy gage wire! The eye bolt goes through the water bottle, clay pot, saucer and tree branch-secure it with a nut on top and on bottom... 1
  • Easy and oh so cute spring project!
